A most enthusiastic report has
come regarding a community-wide
project illustrative of whole-hearted
cooperation on the part of our
people. For instance, the volunteer
fire company has been in ‘the habit
of conducting a coin-card drive.
This year there was combination of
efforts by the Fire company, the
Ambulance [Association and the
Cancer appeal. There were about
thirty workers out canvassing the
homes. Report came to me that
the whole thing was highly success-
ful in number of workers enlisted
and response to the united appeal.
Franklin Township Fire Company
Auxiliary will be holding a game
and card party at Centermoreland
Grange Hall Saturday May 11.
There is to be a quilt donated for

ma George. Sharon LaBar assisted
the committee.
Those present were: Mae Lewis,
Mildred Krum, Jean . Earl, Peggy
Thomas, Jane Lloyd, Priscilla Krum,
Audrey Earl, Marie Shafer, Marie
LaBar, Ida Howell, Alice Daniels,
Janice Vosburg, Catherine Gilbert,
Madge [Smith and Joan Dymond.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Vosburg of
Hicks river road united with the
Mt. Zion church April 21. Mrs.
Vosburg came from the Puritan
Congregational Church of Wilkes-
Barre, and Ralph Vosburg from the
Wyoming Methodist Church.
When I get old it may be written
down that “Mr. Gilbert celebrated
his birthday quietly at home.”
That time hasn’t come yet.
day April 22 was my birthday. It
was my day to visit Valley Crest.
I went. In the middle of the day
I left for a cemetery to hold a Te-
ligious service at the grave of one
who had died with no relatives nor
friends to attend. Since there was
no audience as such I addressed all
my words to God to whom every
soul is of eternal value. Then I
went back to Valley Crest to finish
my calls on the 90 persons on my
responsibility list. That might at
supper Cathy had made me a big
one layer cake of the kind I like
with ‘wintergreen icing laced with
chocolate. Besides the tie, shirt,
hankies and other things from my
family at home a tape came from
Dottie in Africa. It was recorded
the week before.
David Scull brought over his
Webcor tape recorder the next day
and we played Dottie’'s tape mes-
sage. On it she told about how she
celebrated Easter, and about her
vaccination campaign, for they have
a small-pox epidemic on hand. That
was quite a present to her family.
Came through as quickly as an air
letter. So while we had the loan of
a recording machine we filled a
tape amd sent it to her by air.
Last Friday afternoon Charles
Banks and daughter Christine of
West Pittston paid a visit to our
house and had a fine time looking
at all growing things.
There was a pretty sight down
our road the other day. We met
Rickie King pumping away on his
bicycle up the hill. He's the oldest
of the three children of Dick and
Joan ‘King down the road. Then
following up the hill came little
Janice King powering her own bike
with trainer wheels. Right along
with her was mother Joan ‘to see
that the little wheeler didn’t go into
reverse. Well, I suppose it will not
be too long before the youngest,
Wayne, will be trying his wheels.
The tree house im the edge of their
woods I guess is a little too tame
now for this fast moving group.
A Parrish family group attended
a variety shower last Saturday
night at Mae Lewis’, given in honor
of Miss Cherolyn Gilbert whose en-
gagement to Dale Drake was re-
cently announced. Dale is a U.S.
Marine now in Tennessee, and is a
son ‘of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Drake,
Downingtown. Those attending were
Mrs. Lloyd Drake, Miss Cherolyn
Gilbert, Mrs. Russell Lewis and
daughter Mary Louise, Mrs. John
Parrish, Gloria and Flora Parrish,
Mrs. Frank Parrish, Mrs. Addison
Woolbert and daughter Alyce, Mrs.
Edward Miles and Miss Nettie Par-
rish, and the hostess Mrs. Nelson
Lewis.
