On Listening To A Sermon
By REV. CHARLES GILBERT
My pastor Rev. William Reid
preached on one of the “Hard Say-
ings of Jesus” last Sunday: “Be ye
therefore perfect’, from the last of
Matthew 5. It’s a wonder I could
listen to it, splendid sermon that it
was. I had memories of that verse.
‘When I went to Wyoming Seminary
50 years ago I had big ideas of be-
coming the smartest student, the
greatest preacher, pastor of a huge
church some day. When I began to
study Greek under the exacting de-
mands of Professor Gillott I learned
enough Greek to read a little from
the New Testament. I seized on this
text in Greek, wrote it in my text
books, fixed my eye on a Phi Beta
Kappa Key. I aimed for the top.
But I didn’t have it in me, and a
nervous breakdown was about as

good a way out in those days as
there was. And if I couldn't make
perfect grades in scholarship how
was I to do it in the subtler pursuit
of character? I couldn't and didn’t.
1 still think 100% is the proper
aim in studies. I still think Christ
is the proper aim in character
achievement. So I could listen with
interest to Sunday’s sermon. But
how thankful I am for the golden
quality of the gospel of grace! God
deals with imperfect’ beings in the
only way He can and be the “God
of grace and glory”. He helps them,
gives them impossible goals of living,
and then forgives them their abject
failures. He has done that with me.
His forgiveness doesn’t let us off
from ‘trying, but it does save us from
despair.
