Looking At

With GEORGE A. and
EDITH ANN BURKE
FREE SPEECH with no hamper-
ing restrictions is how Howard K.
Smith reads his contract with the
AB.C. network. His program titled
“The Political Obituary of Richard |
M. Nixon’ is proving to be rather,
costly to A.B.C. .
So far, two sponsors, who felt
that Alger Hiss should not have
been allowed to sit in judgment of
Nixon, have cancelled their con-
tracts. Alger Hiss is ‘the former
State Department official that Mr.
Nixon helped convict of perjury for
having denied a role in a Commu-
nist spy ring.
Schick Safety Razor Company is
trying to cancel its million-dollar
advertising contract with A.B.C.
Schick is partial sponsor of “Com-
bat” and “Stoney Burke.” Cancel-
lation would be effective in Janu-
ary.
The second sponsor, James S.
Kemper, president of the Kemper
Insurance Company, said his con-
cern would no longer sponsor the
Wednesday evening telecast of
“A.B.C. Evening Report.” The re-
maining portion of the Kemper’s
26-week contract represent more
than $500,000.
Mr. Kemper was former treasurer
of the Republican National Com-
mittee, former ambassador to Bra-
zil and former president of the
United States Chamber of Com-
merce.
DOROTHY LOUDON may be just
the gal to fill Carol Burnett's shoes
on the Garry Moore show. At least
Garry is hopeful. He is giving her
the same big build-up he gave
Carol. He will have five of the
best comedy writers working with
Dorothy, along with help from the
costume, music and dance depts
when she appears on the December
4th and 25th shows.
Garry has her under option and
if she works out well, she'll be his
new comediene.
Dorothy was born in Boston but
has spent most of her life in
Indiannapolis. Her father was an
all-American basketball player at
Dartmouth. Like Carol Dorothy has
a good singing voice. Most of her
professional experience has been in
supper clubs.
In her first Garry Moore show
she will do a sketch with Durwood
Kirby called ‘The Night People.”
It is built around the theory that
people function better at various
times. Some people really start to
click in the evening while, others
wake up full of pep in the morning
hours.
Durwood is casted as a day per-
son and Dorothy, his wife, is a
night person. Sounds like a good
show.
THE CHOSEN CHILD, a documen-
tary about a husband and wife in
Peekskill, N. Y., who sought to
adopt a child, will be televised by
the National Broadcasting Company
on Sunday, Nov. 25 from 10 to 11
p.m. Film cameras recorded the
couple’s visit to a Westchester
County adoption agency and their
interviews with ‘case workers.
The show will be a study of the
tragedies and happiness surround-
ing child adoption. John Chancel
lor will narrate the program.
THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES —
Number 1 in the Nielson ‘television
ratings, has been sold to the Nihon
Television Network Corporation in
Japan, which will dub in Japanese
dialogues.

Former Dallas
Man Killed By
Monoxide Gas
The death last week of Robert I.
Johnson, 34,18 Margaret Street,
Johnson City, N. Y., a former resi-
dent of Susquehanna Avenue, Dal-
las has been ruled accidental. |
While living in Dallas some years
ago, Mr. Johnson was associated
with Harold “Shorty’’ Smith as a
representative .of the Crawley Milk
Company. \ y
Mr. Johnson was found uncon-
scious in his car in the garage at
the Margaret Street address, by a
neighbor. The garage doors were
closed and ‘the car motor was run-
ning.
Johnson City Detective Sgt. Harry
T. Pettit said investigation dis-
closed that Mr. Johnson was in an
‘exhausted condition’ having slept
only about 45 minutes a night for
the last week or ten days.
Sergeant Pettit said that Mr.
produced independently by his own
company. He will not perform but
will appear as emcee. He hasn't
been on television since 1956. Pat
Boone made his first television ap-
pearance on his show.
FIVE MILLION — CBS has com-
mitted itself to some $5,000,000 for
Danny Kaye's. weekly hour series
next season.
Practically all of Danny’s material
is written by his wife.

It is hard to wait.
Johnson had been working long
hours because in addition to his
regular job with Crowley Milk Co.,
he was preparing to take over ‘the
operation of a restaurant on the
South Side of Binghamton.
Dr. Melvin D. Jones, Broome
County Coroner, said the autopsy
reveals that Mr. Johnson, father of
three, died of carbon monoxide
poisoning after having fallen asleep
in his car.
Desperate efforts by Johnson City
Police and personnel at Wilson
Memorial Hospital to «revive him
were unsuccessful. >
Mr. Johnson was a member of
St. James Roman Catholic Church
in Johnson City and a World War II
veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs.
Ella Johnson and three children,
Debra Jean, Ann ‘Elizabeth and
Robert I., Jr., all of Johnson City;
his father, Ivan Johnson, Endicott;
his mother, Mrs. Eleanor Kanaus,
Portsmouth, Va.; a brother, William
Blazedell, Wellsville and several
aunts and uncles. :
Mr. and Mrs. Willard Whalen,
Luzerne Avenue, close friends of the
Johnsons, motored to Johnson City
where they attended the funeral on
Friday.

THANKSGIVING DAY
Over the river and through the wood,
To grandfather's house we go
The horse knows the way
To carry the sleigh
Through the white and drifted snow.
Over the river and through the wood —
Oh, how the wind does blow!
It stings the toes
And bites the nose,
As over the ground we go.
Over the river and through the wood,
To have a first rate play.
Hear the bells ring,
“Ting a ling ding!”
Hurrah for Thanksgiving Day.
Over the river and through the wood,
» Trot fast, my dapple-gray! |,
Spring over the ground
Like a hunting hound!
For this is Thanksgiving Day.
Ower the river and through the wood,
And straight through the barnyard
Extremely slow,
Over the river and through the wood —
Now grandmother's cap I spy!
Hurrah for the fun!
Is the pudding done?
Hurrah for pumpkin-pie!
