Extensive improvement of roads
projected by the Pennsylvania De-
partment of Highways for next
year, according to recent announce-
ment.
Among many state legislative
routes to be repaved, widened, or
both are the notoriously dangerous
Demunds-Kunkle Road, and various
access routes to the River Route 92
in the Carverton, Orange, Mt. Zion
area.
The following are sections of local
roads slated for improvement, in-
cluding Legislative route numbers,
nature of work to be done, and costs
estimated:
Lake Township: Outlet-Loyalville
Road, = Route 40115, 1.05 miles
widening, resurfacing, new construc-

Jap Beetles
Japanese beetle infestation, little
changed this year in Pennsylvania
from 1961, may continue to hold its
own unless intensive and concerted
eradication measures can be adopt-
ed, Dr. Thomas L. Guyton, director
of the Bureau of Plant Industry,
State Department of Agriculture
has said.
The beetles winter in the
grub stage in the ground, feeding
on grass roots in the fall and spring.
They change to beetles in early
summer, emerging as golden green,
hard shelled adults, ready to de-
vour roses and other flowers and

emerging from untreated plots can
easily infest the treated areas above
ground. -
George B. Slessman, bureau en-
tomologist ‘who directed the beetle
survey, reported infestation par-
ticularly heavy in and near the
Pittsburgh and Philadelphia metro-
politan areas, including Westmore-
land, Fayette, Washington, Beaver
and Butler counties, in addition to
Allegheny, in Southwestern Penn-
sylvania, and Bucks, Montgomery,
Chester and Delaware, along with
Philadelphia, in the Southeast.
Northern tier counties, including
Lackawanna, Wyoming and Sullivan
in the Northeast showed no in-
crease. A small buildup was noted
in a band across the state extend-
