Martin Dies Aged 83 Master Mason Leaves Enduring Memorials Dallas’ master stonermason died Saturday morning at his home in the Roushey Plot. Monuments to William H. Martin abound through- out the area. Stone walls, stone houses, stone fireplaces, cobbled patios, an enduring memorial to a man who saw beauty in the rugged native stone of Pennsylvania, who paused in fitting a stone expertly into its appointed place to say “Isn’t that a beautiful stone? I've never seen a more beautiful stone.” Driving through the countryside, he would stop to look at stones along the edge of a stream, their colors deepened by the splash of water, revelling in their strength, or their smoothness, or their shape. Mr. Martin could build a fireplace that would unfailingly draw, no matter what direction the wind blew. The impressive stone wall around the Newberry Estate on Pioneer Avenue was his work, as were many of the stone walls on Lake Street. His grandson, Harry Martin, Jr. lives in a “painstakingly built stone house at Fernbrook fashioned of fieldstone from the Wilson Ryman place. Mr. Martin, 83, had been failing of recent years. His grandson's stone- house was his last major piece of work, built around fifteen years ago. Five weeks before his death he was taken by ambulance ‘to General Hospital. Last Monday, he came home to spend his last few days with his family. On Satur- day, he died. With seventeen grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren, and many nephews: and nieces, his greatest delight was the children. Watching them start off for school started his day. Watching them come home at night put a happy period to ‘the day. One of his greatgrandchildren, his namesake Billy Martin, was an ace player in the Back Mountain Little League All-Stars who went on to take the Pennsylvania title at Wil- liamsport, and won the first game at Medford, Massachusetts. In the mid-1930’s he served one term as Dallas Township Supervisor, with Alex Wilson and Olin Kunkle. A lifelong resident of Dallas Township, he was son of the late Marshall and Martha Anderson Mar- tin. He belonged to East Dallas Methodist Church. His wife, the former Marilla May, died in 1939. Sunday afternoon at 4, traditional ceremonies conducted by the Rt. Rev. Frederick J. Warnecke, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Bethlehem, will make official the status of Rev. John S. Prater as rector of Prince of Peace Episcopal Church. The public is invited 5 attend this first Institution Service held in the edifice. The Prince of Peace Church, in the beginning a mission church un- der ‘the aegis of Grace Episcopal Church during the ministry of Rev. Ralph Weatherly, became a self- supporting parish in 1961, when Rev. William McClelland was vicar. Rev. William Williams, now rector of St. Patrick’s in Washington, im- mediately preceded Rev. McClelland. When the congregation was first formed, Shavertown Fire Hall was the meeting place. Since the edifice was built, a par- ish hall has been constructed, and this hall, though adequate at ‘the time, was expanded in 1957 to satisfy the needs of a growing con- gregation. The original edifice was dedicated in March of 1950. Rev. McClelland succeeded Rev. Williams in 1952. The parish hall addition was dedicated in late November of 1957. Over ‘the years, parking areas have been increased to provide space for a steadily growing congregation. Rev. Ralph Weatherly, rector emeritus of Grace Church, and sub- stitute during the early part of this year when the congregation was without a pastor, will be present for the Installation, together with many Bishop Of Diocese Of Bethlehem To Install Prince Of Peace Rector | REV. JOHN S. PRATER other clergymen from the Diocese. Senior warden is Henry Doran, junior warden, Charles Nodder. Vestrymen are: Joe MacVeigh, the first senior warden when the church was built; Jack Stanley, Robert Maturi, Donald Evans, Paul God- dard, Floyd Sanders, Albert Antain- itis, Edwin Roth, Patrick Reithoffer, Joseph Law, Curtis Prothero, and Theodore Ruff. Another vestryman, Calvin Hall, Boy Scout executive, has moved away from the area. The congregation now numbers 327 communicants, 425 baptized members, Since 1961, it has been self-supporting, requiring no assist- ance from the Diocese of Bethlehem.
