This fact was established follow- ing a report from the Pennsylvania Department of Health which made a statistical five-year study of cen- tenarian deaths between 1957- 1961. During this period Pennsylvania had 470 residents whose age at death was reported ‘to be over 99 years. Of these 470 deaths, 342 were females, or about three times the number of males, which was 128. Surpassing the century mark were 257 whose ages ranged from 101 to 115. Heart disease, as in the general population, claimed the greatest number of deaths. The other lead- ing causes of death of centenarians differ from that found in the gen- eral population. General arterio- sclerosis was the second most fre- quent cause of death. Other causes were vascular lesions of the central nervous system, influenza and pneumonia. Cancer, which is the second most frequent cause of death in the overall population, is in fifth place. Accidental falls ac- count for the same number of deaths in this age group as cancer. Philadelphia and Allegheny County were given as the residence of the decedent in 96 and 48 deaths respectively. Other counties in which the number of centenarians dying was high were [Lancaster with 18, Luzerne with 17, Berks and Montgomery 186, County with 15. Bedford, Centre, Elk, Fulton, Montour, Pike and Tioga Counties had no resident centenarian deaths between 1957 and 1961. Yc ALTOR REAL ESTATE e INSURANCE 61 WEST SOUTH STREET WILKES-BARRE, PA. 823-8878 ¥ or 674-5301 or 674-6361 Carbon Monoxide Season Is Here A warning about carbon monoxide poisoning is issued by the Regional Medical Director, Dr. C. Hayden Phillips, of the Pennsylvania De- partment of Health. “Cold weather means closed windows in homes and automobiles. Both places may have sources of this poisonous gas which can cause death,” Dr. Phillips said. “One of the dangerous aspects of Dr. Phillips warned, “is that the symp- toms do not immediately suggest the cause. In an automobile, nausea and dizziness, accompanied by head- ache, ‘should not be attributed to motion sickness. Instead, automo- bile windows should be opened and fresh air breathed for several minutes.” ! Danger of ignoring early symp- toms is that those symptums ean progress rapidly from mild « to severe. By the time a victim is suddenly aware that he is being seriously poisoned, he may be only seconds from unconsciousness and unable to help himself, /Gas-burning appliances in the home should be checked carefully for defective operation, all gas burn- ers examined and cleaned. Ample fresh air should always be available in garages and automobiles, even on the coldest days. The exhaust system of the car should be carefully checked for leaks. “If someone in your presence is overcome despite these precautions, | move him immediately to fresh air, and give him artificial respiration if he is not breathng,” Dr. Phillips advised. \ The best treatment is prevention, SUBSCRIBE TO THE POST cS FOR AV 14 Eat MONK Plbg. & Hig.
