ER ” - a » aaa SE 1 “MR. HOBBS TAKES A DALLAS, PENNSYLVANIA Nit. Zion Lightning Hits Preacher's Home Just how close can a bolt of lightning come without hurting you? I thought it was close enough when I was pastor at Carverton. I was sitting in my upstairs study near the foot of ‘the attic stairs. At the top of the attic stairs was a fuse box where the electric wire went to the barn light. A crash of lightning came and I smelled hot metal. I went up the attic stairs and there lay pieces of shattered and burnt fuses all over the floor. That was close enough! : ‘A week ago Monday night there was a bing-banger of a thunder storm. Lights were out. Then a sudden snap-crash which brought everybody wide awake, asking me downstairs if I were all right. 1 wasn’t very wide awake but’ an- swered twice, “Yes, I'm all right.” In the morning we found that the phone was dead and on another line notified the office. Later that morning the repair men came and repaired it. They said the lightning struck our line and the trouble was in the little phone box on the corner of the house. That was about six feet from where I lay sleeping! That was close enough, but it was all en- closed in ‘the phone wire or possibly the lightning rod cable running into the ground beside it. No mark on the house. Thanks, Lord, for the gift of life continuing! Amen. Doings To And Around Houses Jerry Shaffer is painting his house (the former Paul Smith place) white. Doing it himself. : The Prebola place in the woods on the road to Mt. Zion Church is nearing completion. - He has had Mr. Everetts in there with his bull- dozer grading the grounds. Norman Lewis is having his house painted a dark red, adding much to the attractiveness of. the house among the evergreens. Nelson Lewis has torn off the front porch of his house and built a modern ‘stoop’, making a neat job of it. PROGRESS ON ROAD The Carverton parsonage-to- Sutton Creek road is beginning to get its crushed rock base preparatory to black topping. Don’t try driving over that rock stuff if you don’t have to. It will take too much out of your car. On the other hand, perhaps that will be all smoothed up by the time this paper comes out. It looks along our road as if there might be early prospect of beginning to build shoulders and lay the rock base. Again I would say that by the time the paper comes out the road will be that far along. Letter From Marine A nice letter from ‘our marine” Gene LaBar at Cherry Point. Says, “It is a little hard to find things to say as not too much goes on here. I am looking forward ‘to playing football right now. I hope to make a better showing this year than I did last year.” Supply Pastor ‘Last Sunday morning we-all went to Simpson Methodist Church on North Main avenue Scranton where I preached. I think I preached there one {Sunday two years ago. One thing that pleased me was to hear that the lady soloist during the school year has a junior choir of FORTY FORT THEATRE TONITE, FRIDAY, SATURDAY Shows, 6 and 9 “KING OF KINGS” SUNDAY, MONDAY, TUESDAY (Continuous Sunday, 8 to 11) WALT DISNEY’S “PARENT TRAP” {Howell and Garwin Tough brought ‘Scoble daughter of Mr. and Mrs. | the Cardinal and the sparrow have done that. That is, unless I get called on for somewhere before then! Although we were absent from the Zion church Sunday we heard that Elfrieda Marie Vrehl of Carverton was the guest soloist. We knew — without asking — that she did beautifully. She chose as her solo “Dear Land of Home” by Sibellius. CARVERTON NEWS Summer Festival of Music was held at Carverton Church Sunday night. Rehearsals have been going | on for some time under the direc- torship of Charles Johns, assistant pastor for the summer.. Then on Sunday night Charles Johns was to be there directing but his plane didn’t get through in time. He was grounded at Pittsburgh but finally got there just as the program was over. But Johns had got his direct- ing work well under way in the re- hearsals and the program went off well. The offering was to be used for choir robes. Junior and senior choirs worked together. In: addition a barber shop quartet consisting of Sheldon Ehret, Harry Taylor, Harry some sacred numbers. Carol Sutton was the capable ac- companist for the whole program. Soloists: were: Elfrieda Hefft, Betty Jean Davi s,and Paul Turner. They were really good. In addition ‘the choir was composed of Penny Jane Metz, Roberts Gay, Arline Galyean, Geraldine Galyean, Margaret Me- Hale, Judy Dana, Patti Parrish, Marlene Sickler, Sally Beth Cyphers, ames Phillips, Richard Phillips, hristine Rishell, Gretchen Hefft, Lenchen Hefft, Grace Harris, De- anna Gay, Marie Hefft, Pauline Phillips, Dorothy Walp, Alice Davis, Allegra Spare.
