The fact that Wilkes-Barre Busi-
ness College is 77 years old may
come as a great surprise to many.
Nevertheless, it is true that the
school was founded before such
American institutions as Stanford,
Temple University "or Carnegie
Tech. As an institution that has
trained thousands of women as
secretaries, it antedates such fa-
mous women’s colleges as Bryn
Mawr, Goucher and Skidmore. It
is one of the oldest business colleges
in the United States.
~~. The Business College was
founded in an era when high
schools and colleges turned their
backs on the needs of the business
world. In a period when only
Greek, Latin, Euclid and Shakes-
peare were synonymous with edu-

responded to the great industrial
and business expansion of the late
19th century by training the ac-
countants, bookkeepers and secre-
taries so sorely needed by banks,
railroads, and hundreds of other
businesses. Many of these young
men and women so trained became
executives and leaders in Wyoming
_ Valley business and industry.

many years,
a
are responsible: First, is the great
emphasis on post-high school edu-
cation. Second, is the fact thatbusi-
nessmen, like other employers, de-
mand more maturity and more
education from their employes. Just
as teachers once taught school with
only a high school diploma, so of-
fice workers and bookkeepers were
once hired with minimum educa-
tional qualifications. Teachers, to-
day, must have a college degree.
Secretaries and office workers find
the educational demands on them
increasing all the time. Anew class-
ification, CPS, Certified Public Sec-
retary, accents the growing em-
phasis on education.
Some special accolade should go
to the Business College and perhaps
to all the other private business
schools in the nation, for in a period
when the public schools and the
' colleges are having so many fi-
nancial problems, these schools are
not asking for handouts from the
state government or the Federal
Government. Without subsidies or
endowments, they operate in the
best tradition of private enterprise,
making and selling a good product
and providing community service.
