“But it was a slip of the tongue, darling! I meant to say
you were deductible—not expendable!”
All summer, children have been
hanging over the pasture fence out
beyond Alderson, yearning over the
baby Shetland ponies. The forty
brood mares on the Joseph Rosentel
farm across the road from [Sterling
Farms have just about finished foal-
ing for the year. Small editions of
palomino Shetlands frisk about the
pasture, the smaller ones keeping
close to their mothers.
Brood mares and foals during the
winter are housed in the newly re-
conditioned barns. There is a steady
demand for yearling ponies.
Adam Stefanowicz, for eight years
manager for John Fine's farm in
Loyalville, now manager for Mr.
Rosenstel of Forty Fort, reports that
in addition to the ponies, the farm
has 85 registered Holsteins, 60
milkers. Outlet for milk is the
Grablick Dairy in Pittston.
Facilities, says Mr. Stefanowicz,
are sufficient for a larger herd. Ex-
pectation is that it will number 100
shortly, A tiled milking parlor
routes milk directly ‘from cow to
cooling tank without interference
of human hands., Temperature of
fluid milk is reduced sharply and
immediately to 35 degrees.
Extensive renovation is going on.
The handsome | hand-hewed fence
which is extending itself around the
property, up the road which divides
Sterling Farm from the former Kern
acreage, and around the sharp cor-
ner where the most beautiful pink
laurel in the countryside has fallen
a prey to the advancing bulldozers,
will eventually enclose the entire
property.
The farm belonged in the early
1900s to Charles Kern, father of
William Kern who bought the pro-
perty eventually and last fall sold it
to Joseph Rosentel.
Charles Kern owned about 400
acres, bounded on the south by the
Buckwheat Hollow Road, which fol-
lows the former logging train
tracks. '
The acreage includes the Mon-
tross farm, the Mark Morgan farm
on the hillside, and a 150 acre tract
purchased from the Albert Lewis
Lumber Company after logging
operations were completed and the
hillsides denuded.
Charles had a milk business in
Wilkes-Barre, with =a five-wagon
operation. Milk was hauled in from
the farm by mules and horses, for
distribution.
In 1918, when it became impos-
sible to keep farm help because of

regular meeting of the Board, 8:00
P.M., August 14, 1962 in the library
of the Dallas Senior High School,
Dallas, Pennsylvania. Bids shall be
plainly marked on the envelope
identifying the bid.

‘Walker.
Mr. Walker, was a high school

things. He was a boarding school
student for ' several years so he
should not mind being away from
home. He will attend Dallas Area
High School.
Ross is deeply interested in farm-
ing methods and techniques, par-
ticularly dairy farming. His father
operates a 700 acre farm with 100
head ‘of dairy cows, along with
grazing, tobacco, and general farm-
ing.
