Those were three memorable days
for us Gilberts. I guess it has been
five years since we have all been
away from home together. We all
stayed at the home of Rev. and Mrs.
Norman Clemens in Baltimore Mon-
day and Tuesday nights. They were
gracious hosts, long time friends.
On Tuesday morning we went to
Johns Hopkins University campus
for the outdoor program of granting
degrees. A slight drizzle marked
the beginning. Umbrellas were up
and down. - Necks craned to catch
just a glimpse of the gowned gradu-
ates as they came in to the area.
The program progressed but a little
ways when the downpour came.
Umbrellas shed off one head on to
another's neck! Nobody kept dry.
The president, Dr. Milton Eisenhauer,
asked the graduates to stand, then
pronounced the sentence of degree-
granting to the entire group at once.
A short resume of a longer speech
was given by the guest speaker. A
sentence benediction was pronounced
and everybody skuttled for cover.
Diplomas were picked up inside.
Dottie was the editor of the year
book for the School of Public
Health and Hygiene and of course
had to mill around selling them. So
we got to meet many of the wonder-
ful people we had been hearing
about. -
We visited Fort McHenry and
looked out to the harbor where
Traver is the son of Mr.
ma and Grandpa Snyder are taking
care of brother Tommy, who is 17
months. Mother and daughter ex-
pect to be home on Friday.
Last Sunday Margie Culver was
honored at a cook-out birthday
party at Noxen. The picnic table
had a centerpiece of a large decor-
ated cakeand gaily colored balloon
decorations.
Those enjoying the cook-out were
Mr. and Mrs. James Morris, Forty
Fort; Mr. and Mrs. Mort Holds-
worth, Melanee and Karen, Forty
Fort; Mr. and Mrs. Alex Covert and
Kenin, Fernbrook:; Mr. and Mrs.
Walter Tevorek, Pikes Creek; Louis
Oplinger, Wilkes-Barre; Dick Cul-
ver, Cindy, Clem, Jimmy, Susie and
Corky of East Dallas and the guest
of fhonor.
Mt. Zion
Francis Scott Key composed the Star
Spangled Banner when he saw the
flag that was “still there” over the
fort.
I forgot to say that we heard
mocking birds singing in Clemens’
back yard where they had a light on
by the feeding station.
BOWLERS’ TURKEY SUPPER
About 125 bowlers and families
sat down Saturday night to a tur-
key supper at the Mt. Zion church.
The W.S!C.S. served the meal.
BUNDLES FROM HEAVEN
This is belated news but it is still
good news and the parents (and
grandparents!) are still happy with
their “bundles from heaven”. For
instance, Cynthia Lee Sharpe was
born to Mr. and Mrs. Sharpe
(Noreen Van Tuyle) on May 25.
(Mildred and Leon VanTuyle, grand-
parents, and themselves are young
married couple yet!) And then
Norma VanTuyle Hutchinson had a
baby, Elizabeth Ann on May 28. I
should have said Dr. and Mrs. James
Hutchinson of Abington.
Mr. and Mrs. Brainerd W. Daniels
(she was Nancy Carpenter) had a
baby June 7, Linda Jean. That's
Skippy’s. Those grandparents, W.
Brainerd and Alice are also joy and
gladness personified.
Pastor William Reid announced
at church that Mt. Zion is now
about three quarters along toward
its goal in the Methodist Progress
Crusade. Mt, Zion has reputation of
going over the goal in any of its
programs and expects to do the same
with this one.
Our pond is too dirty to swim in.
The water makes fine for sprinkling
the lawn or garden. Just how can
such a pure white and lovely beyond
description pond lily grow from such
slime baffles me. We are oh-ing and
ah-ing over these gems of beauty
this «year.
How is our road coming along?
Well, we are now looking down our
noses at passers by. We are a house
on a hill although the actual eleva-
tion above sea level is just the same
—1225 feet. And we can look right
up the power line path to the road
going to Mt. Zion from Wyoming:
SPECIAL DEDICATION
AT VALLEY CREST
Last Sunday afternoon at the
regular church time, 2, there was
held a special service. It was the
occasion for the presentation of a
pulpit Bible. The Bible was given by
the Rev. and Mrs. Wesley Boyd of
Shenandoah in appreciation of Miss
Elizabeth Kennedy, Administrative
Director of the Luzerne County Ad-
ministrative District. The Bible had
been given some weeks ago but until
recently there was no pulpit or lec-
tern to hold such a Bible. Now the
beautiful lectern is in the chapel and
the Bible was placed on it. Both
Bible and lectern were dedicated to
spiritual worship at Valley Crest.
The church services for June are
in charge of the Wyoming Avenue
Christian church of which the Rev.
Edmund Johns is the pastor. At the
special service Sunday afternoon the
organist was Mrs, John (C. Shilale.
Two guest singers presented a duet,
“Teach Me To Pray’, Mrs. Thomas
Hughes and Mrs: Abner Millard of
Plymouth. .
The chaplain, Rev. Charles Gilbert,
conducted the dedication service.
Dr. Alfred C. Kraft medical director
of Valley Crest, gave the acceptance
speech. Rev. Wesley Boyd of Shen-
andoah gave the closing prayer and
benediction. A number of those who
were visiting patients attended the
service with the patients.
