Danny MacAvoy, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Sheldon MacAvoy, N. Main
Street, Shavertown, received a
painful injury to his elbow while
playing at Westmoreland play-
ground. The break was so severe
that is required hospitalization for
four days. ;

fiance, Lt. Thomas S. Pesikey, stu-
dents at Pennsylvania State Uni-
versity, spent the weekend with the
former’s parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Bachman, Upper Demunds

{Cheryl Hontz, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Arthur Hontz, Pioneer
Avenue, submitted to an emer-
gency appendectomy last week. She
is a third grade student at
Shavertown Elementary School.
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Jeziorski,
Hunlock Creek R.D. 2, have an-
nounced the birth of a daughter at
General Hospital on May 21.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Davis and
sons, Jim and Ricky, Parrish Street,
and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Davis,
Davenport Street, will motor to New
Jersey on Saturday to visit the
Ronald Carruthers family and rela-
tives. On Sunday they will attend
the Yankee-Detroit Baseball Game
at the Yankee Stadium in. New
York.
Mrs. Lewis Culp Sr., better known
to Back Mountain folks as “Aunt
Fannie”, will spend this week visit-
ing friends. and relatives in this
area. Mrs: Culp, formery of Hunts-
vlley now makes her home in Ken-
vil, S.J. ?

Street, has returned from Nesbitt
Hospital after submitting to a
second series of tests.
Mr. and Mrs. William Barrington,
Dallas R.D. 3 have announced the
biidy of twin daughters at Nesbitt
Hospital on May 20.

ents, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Shaw.
Mr. and Mrs. (Charles Calkins and
chigiren, have moved from Harris
Hi” Road, Trucksville to 84 Jack-
son St., Dallas. Everyone welcomes
them to the neighborhood.
Joe Schneider, Davenport ISt.,
left Monday for Philadelphia, where
he is serving in the United States
Navy. He expects to make it his
career. He is twenty years old, the
same age his father, Captain Joseph
Schneider first entered the Army.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Shiber, the
late Ray Shiber’s brother and his
wife, of North Connecticut, were
recent guests of Mrs. Ray Shiber
when returning from their winter
home in Tampa Florida.
Mrs. Charles Exler,’ sister of the
late Ray Shiber, and daughter, Mrs.
Bernard Berlock, of Pittsburgh, were
weekend guests of Mrs. Ray Shiber,
Cengter Hill Road.

Bird Club Field Trip
To Cape May, Saturday
A Bird Club Field Trip last Friday
and Saturday, took to Cape May
these members: Frank Jackson, Ed-
win Johnson, Jerry Baltimore,
Barry Levine, Rev. Deisher, and
Harry Brown. They left the area
at 5 p.m. Friday evening, arrived
at Cape May at 9:30, bagged shore
birds all day Saturday, and were
back here Saturday night after a
full schedule taking them to the
Hegonry, Brigantine Wild Life Ref-
ug, and Tupperton.
Spotted were egrets herons and
geese of many varities, ducks, vul-
tures, oyster-catches, many varieties
of sand-pipers, as well as common
Jand birds. The expedition was de-
signed to check ‘shore and water
birds, with land birds as a bonus.

John Swires Observe
Fiftieth Anniversary
Mr. and Mrs. John Swire, Sweet
Valley, will observe their fifteenth
wedding anniversary on Saturday,
May 26.
The couple was married on May
26, 1947, at St. Paul’s Lutheran
Church White Haven, with the late
Rev. William Geiger, officiating. At-
tendants were Mrs, Swire's sister,
Shirley Schoch, and Bruce Swire,
brother of the bridegroom.
Mrs. Swire is the former Lillian
Schoch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
William * A. Schoch, White Haven.
Mr. Swire is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
George Swire, Broadway.
There are five sons, George, John,
Jr., Daniel, twins, David and Dale
and one daughter, Donna Kay.
Mr. Swire is an employee of the
Glen Alden Corporation.

Mr. and Mrs. James D. Edwards,
Sweet Valley announce the birth
of their first child, James Daniel
Edwards, Jr. The new arrival, born
in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital on
May 10, weighed six pounds, nine
ounces at birth.
Mrs. Edwards is the former Joyce
Gordon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Lawrence Gordon, Dallas, R.D. No. 2.
Mr. Edwards is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. John Edwards, Harvey's Lake.
James Daniel, Jr. is the first
grandson of Mr. and Mrs. John
Edwards and the twenty-second

Downend and Kathy Downend an-
nounce the birth of a baby girl in
Kodiac, Alaska, May 20. There is
another little girl, Susie fourteen
months old.

Katherine Smith of Kingston. Yeo-
man Downend is son of Mr. and
Mrs. Ralph M. Downend of Goss
Manor. He phoned Mom and Pop
with the glad news Sunday morn-
ing at 1:30 — not collect. Bill was

Dr. and Mrs. Jerome Benjamin
Marshall 2nd, Orlando, announce
the birth of an eight pound, nine
ounce baby boy, Jerome Benjamin
3rd, at the Orlando Air Force Base
Hospital on May 16. There is a
little girl, Lisa, aged two and a

Leonard Baers Return
From Trip To Europe
Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Baer, Sweet
Valley, have returned from a trip
to France and Spain. The couple
traveled from the Wilkes-Barre-
Scranton Airport to New Jersey by
plane, taking a helicoptor to Idle-
wild Airport, where they boarded
a jet to Paris. From there they
flew to Bordeaux where they were
met by Mr. Baer’s uncle, Sgt. First
Class Calvin Baer, and motored to
south of Bordeaux. Sgt. and Mrs.
Baer recently adopted twin boys,
Dale and David. Sgt. Baer, who
will retire from the Army in 1968
is a former local re His
wife is from Germany.
The Baers toured the Southern
part of France and spent some time
in Spain. They also vifited the
Shrine of Lourdes, France. Mrs.
Baer is the former Muriel Belles,
R. L. Kitchen, Sweet Valley. He is
Transportation Agent at the Wilkes-
Barre-Scranton Airport.

Little Sharon Hinkle
Falls And Breaks Arm
Fourteen month old Sharon Hin-
kle, daughter of Mr, and Mrs. Don-
ald Hinkle of Meadowcrest, Trucks-
ville, fell while playing on the steps
at the home of her grand parents,
Mr. and Mrs, William Lohman, Loh-
man Street, = Trucksville, Friday
night and broke her right arm, X-
Rays directed by Dr. C. G. Perkins
and taken at Nesbitt Hospital
showed a clean break between the
wrist and elbow. Grandpa Lohman
who was baby sitting while her
mother and grandmother did the
marketing, was broken hearted.
The arm now set and in a sling,
she is getting along nicely; but
won't be as good as new for about
six weeks!

Bonnie Ruth Jenkins, daughter of
Mr, and Mrs. Thomas H. Jenkins,
91 Terrace Drive, Shavertown, was
among more than thirty Wilkes
College students who were recog-
nized by the college for extra cur-
ricular activity during the scholas-
tic year now drawing to a close.
The awards were made during Stu-
dent Assembly in Wilkes gym-
nasium last week. Miss Jenkins re-
ceived an award for her activity on
and membership in the Wilkes Col-
lege Student Government.
A graduate of Westmoreland
Senior High School, she is a junior
pursuing a 'B. A. degree in English.
Miss Jenkins qualified for the
Dean’s. List for the Fall, 1959;
Spring, 1960, and Fall, 1961.

Dr. K. C.Cirtautus, professor of hu-
manities at College Misericordia, and
author of “The American (College
Girl,” was guest speaker at the
meeting of Back Mountain Memorial
Library Book Club held in the annex
Monday afternoon. Professor Cir-
tautus said he could not be objective
enough to review his book but he
would like to talk on how you come
to write a book, how much hard
work sacrifice and loneliness it
takes and how you get it published.

and the professor entered, followed,
subject being the value of a college
education to a housewife,

archestra will be featured at the
{annual Spring Dance, “Twisting In
Orbit” sponsored by Dallas Junior
Woman's Club Friday evening, June
1st, at Irem Temple Country Club.
Dancing will be from 9-1 am.
Door prizes will be awarded. The
dance is open to the public. Make

Rev. Joseph Sproule, formerly of
Dallas, at his home at Bangor over
the weekend. They also attended
{the [Christian Ministerial Confer-
{ence of which Rev. Sproule is pres-
ident, in Philadelphia on Saturday.
Rev. Sproule is planning to move
shortly to Martin's Creek.
