VOTE FLEMING FOR STATE REPRESENTATIVE (SIXTH LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT) ON Control of brush and forest fires in the Back Mountain area has been pretty much left to local vol- unteer fire companies. This is the consensus of many local fire chiefs who say that the State Department of Forests and Waters has practically abandoned the Harvey Fire Tower located on Chestnut Ridge back of Irem Temple Country Club. For many years the tower was manned during the hazardous forest fire season of spring and fall but that has not been the case in rec- ent years. ; There are also no organized for- est fire crews in the Back Moun- tain area as there were for a num- ber of years, when trained crews with specialized equipment were operating in Dallas, Kunkle and Noxen. Now much of this work is hand- led by volunteers who leave their occupations to respond to the many brush fire alarms in Kingston, Dal- las, Jackson, Lehman, Lake and Noxen Townships. State Abandons Forest Fire Work Here To Volunteer Crews Fred Dodson of Harry Smith Company at Kunkle is of the opin- ion that the breakdown of trained fire crews came about because of the low wages paid fire fighters by the State Department of Forests and Waters. Alvin ‘Shaffer of Dr. Henry M. Laing Company, says interest in the Dallas Forest Fire Fighting Crew of which he was once a member, waned for lack of leadership. Young men lost interest because wages were only 85c per hour for hard dirty work and crews had to wait six months or a year before they received their checks. “Now volunteer firemen fight all of these brush fires as a matter of civic duty at great inconvenience to themselves and with no reward except the satisfaction that they have prevented as much property damage as possible.
