DALLAS, PENNSYLVANIA
THE DALLAS POST, THURSDAY, APRIL 26, 1962
Open House For Public On May 6
Claude H. Butler, M. D., Super-
intendent of Retreat State Hospital
announces that Open House will be
held Sunday, May 6, in observance
of national Mental Health Week.
[The public is urged to visit the
thospital which serves the many
surrounding communities.
“Today the mental hospital is
thanging,” says Dr. Butler. “atten-
tion is shifting from having a high
fence on the outside . . . or a hos-
pital reached only by ferry . .. to
having an effective treatment pro-
gram on the inside. Buildings re-
flect a cheerful and optimistic look.
Hospital routines are being changed
to emphasize participation in occu-
pational and recreational therapies
rather than mere custodial care.”
Visitors at Retreat will find that
the arts have great therapeutic
value. Music can be used to influ-
ence attitudes and moods, com-
batting tedium, discouragement,
and feelings of exclusion.
At Retreat, music is taken in all
music as well as folk and square
dances. It is used to lighten the
moods of the wards.
Choral groups rehearse together.
There is a glee club which is an
orderly medium for socialization,
contact with reality . . .-and. the
pleasure of achievement as a group.
From this group is selected an en-
tertaining unit which goes into the
community to present programs.

Kiwanis Club Now
Formed In Mexico
Dallas Kiwanis Club President
Jerome K. Gardner reports that
Kiwanis International has recently
established its first club outside of
United States and Canada. On April
17, Tijuana, lower California, be-
came the first Mexican city to es-
tablish a Kiwanis Club, with 71
charter members.
The new club was helped to org-
anize by neighboring Kiwanis clubs
of San Diego and Chula Vista. Form-
ral charter presentation is scheduled
for May 15.
Formation of the Tijuana Kiwanis
Club came less than a year after
a delegate body in Toronto approved
such action in spreading the concept
of Kiwanis into lands other than
the United States and Canada.
