A half century performing devo- tionally the sacramental service for the church! [This is the record just completed by Mrs. Mary Lewis of the Mt. Zion Methodist Church. The story came out at the annual quar- terly conference Monday night at the Orange church. Mrs. Lewis had requested the nominating commit-~ tee to name someone else to the oi- fice of communion steward and Mrs. Audrey Earl was elected. Pastor Reid called the attention of the district superintendent Rev. Leon ‘Bouton to the length of Mrs. Howard Lewis’ service. The con- ference at once moved a resolution of appreciation to Mrs. Lewis. In the Methodist Church it is the duty of the communion steward to provide and prepare the communion elements consisting of unfermented grape juice (usually but inacurately referred to as wine,) and the bread. She arranges these on the table, covering them with a “fair linen cloth” as prescribed in the ritual. The plates of bread are covered {with a separate linen napkin. Mary Lewis saw to it that this linen was spotlessly white, neatly ironed and folded. The person chosen to do this sacred act must be acquainted with the traditional usages of the Meth- odist Church and herself be a faith- ful attendant at the church when possible. It was actually 52 years ago but Mrs, Lewis says it is well enough to say 50! In the beginning there was no special name give to this office nor was it a part of the official list. It happened this way: The pastor, Rev. Carl Councilman, had asked one member to bring bread and an- other to bring the wine. The one who brought the bread gave it to the minister in the form of a solid half loaf. Mr. Councilman handed it in turn to Mary Lewis and asked: “Please take this down to the kit- chen and cut it in suitable pieces for the plate.” From then on Mrs. Lewis took care of preparing the communion Dallas, NEW LK-15 Our Sanitone Dry Clean bedded dust that dims too! phone . . . write NE EEE Lucky With Money! It happened one time | that a member was asked to bring the wine, and he really did just that, strong port wine! There was a good deal of choking over that, for Methodist throats are not made for fermented wine! Some who found out about it were furious. It was all a mistake. In those days the ,‘wine” was taken from a common chalice or goblet. During one pastorate the minister asked that a clean napkin be provided for wiping the brim of the cup after each partaking. The public was beginning to get germ- conscious and individual glasses were substituted. ranged in trays and by counting the used glasses the communion ste- ward could tell how many had com- muned. ! The cleaning and sterilizing these little cups and replacing them when broken became the added duty of the communion steward. After the cups were cleaned they were re- placed in the traysto be kept tight- ly covered and dust free. It was the communion steward’s place to esti- mate the number of glasses likely to be needed. [She used to keep a close watch when an unexpectedly large congregation attended, and Mrs. Lewis has also been the teacher of the “Mary Lewis Bible Class” for a number of years. When necessary Blanche Lewis has sub- stituted as teacher. This more than a century-old society has had a history. Mary Lewis has been quietly gathering items for a written account. At the present time she is adding to previ- ously written histories. Although since injuring her hip sometime ago Mrs. Lewis has not been in the good health to which Stephen M.
