For Russell R. Cooke
Native of Beaumont, and closely
related to a number of local resi-
dents, Russell Andrew Cooke, Kings-
port, Tennessee, died Sunday morn-
ing, aged 59, after an illness of
several months.
He will be buried in Forty Fort
Cemetery today, following services’
conducted from the Hugh B. Hughes
Funeral Home at 2.
His parents were the late Andrew
H. and Della Knapp Cooke. For the
past twentyfive years he was a
mechanical draughtsman for East-
man Kodak Company in Kingsport.
As a lad, he graduated from Girard
College. :
He is survived by his widow, the
former Margaret Shepherd of Kings-
ton; sisters: Mrs. Howard Crosby,
Knoxville, Tenn.; Mrs. Hope Ide,
Elizabeth Cooke and Mrs. Kenneth
Calkins, Idetown; brothers: Paul V.
Parrish, Idetown; Edward R. Par-
rish, Kingston.

Enjoys Carolling
Guests at the Carpenter Conval-
escent Home report that carols sung
by a number of groups of young
people reminded them of happy days
when they were children. Groups
brought with them, as well as carol
singing, fruit and flowers and small
reminders of the holiday season.
Helping make the holiday pleas-
ant for patients were: Brownie
Troop from Dallas, Mrs. Hunter lead-
er; Back Mountain Girl Scouts, Mrs.
William Wright, chairman. Girl
Scout troops 27, 230, and 169, Dal-
las; Idetown Girl Scouts; Rainbow
Girls; and the Salvation Army.
Among the adults who arranged
programs were Mrs. Fred Daley,
Mrs. Evelyn Hopkins, Mrs. Donald
B. Smith.

W.S.C.S. of Loyalville Methodist
Church met at the home of Mildred
Darnell. The president Maryann
Swire opened with a story of Christ
read by Dianne Wegner. Christmas
carols were sung, gifts were ex-
changed, and everyone enjoyed a
dainty luncheon. Beside the above
mentioned, these attended: Bessie
Ide, Doris Stuart, Martha Steinruck,
Emily Lord, Martha Swire, Arline
Stuart, Josie Hummel and guest
Linda Darnell. The next meeting
to be held at the home of Bessie
Ide, January 16.

For Wilbur R. Shaw
‘Services for Wilbur R. Shaw,
Sweet Valley, are scheduled for
Friday at 2 p.m. from the Bronson
Funeral Home, with burial at Maple
Grove. Officiating will be Rev. Wil-
liam Hughes, assisted by Rev. E. J.
Waterstripe and Rev. Kirby Jones.
Friends may call tonight, 7 to 9,
Mr. Shaw, 89, admitted to
General Hospital two days before
his death Tuesday morning, had
been in apparent good health, able
to attend Sweet Valley Church of
Christ and its Men’s Bible Class.
He had served as church trustee
and was Ross Township supervisor
for a number of years.
His wife, Lydia, died in 1951, six
years after the Golden Wedding ob-
servance.
Mr. Shaw was born in Sweet
Valley, son of the late Thomas and
Amanda Rood Shaw. He was a
farmer and lumberman. Three years
ago, ‘his daughter Mrs. Charles
Brown of Syracuse, moved to Sweet
Valley, buying the Naugle home
near North Lake road, in order to
have her father with her in his
declining years.
He leaves his daughter, Mrs.
Brown; a son Raymond, both of
Sweet Valley; 22 grandchildren, and
23 greatgrandchildren; a sister, Mrs.
Edith Long, Sweet Valley.

whose brother William Comiskey,
63, died at Palmyra, N.Y. on Christ’
mas Eve; also to Mrs. Irene Comis,
key of Lehman, his sister-in-law:
Mr. Comiskey suffered a fatal heart
attack. Mrs. Beisel, ‘with her sister
Mrs. Frank Ottenson of Wilkes-
Barre, attended the funeral.

George 1. Bednar Has |
Fatal Heart Attack
George J. Bednar, Shavertown,
died at 46 in the prime of life,
passing away Saturday night at
Mercy Hospital, where he had been
admitted suffering from a fatal
heart attack.
A requiem mass was celebrated
at St. Therese’'s Tuesday morning,
followed by burial at Mt. Olivet.
Holy Name Sciety recited the Ros-
ary New Year's night.
Mr. Bednar had been maintenance
man ‘at College Misericordia for a
number of years. A native of Lu-
zerne, son of the late Peter and
Ann Hytol Bednar, he moved to
Shavertown fifteen’ years ago. He
belonged to St. Therese’s and its
Holy Name Society. He was vice
president of Shavertown Volunteer
Fire Company.

Catholic High School was an all-
scholastic football player; Diana, Viv-
ian, Lorraine, and Debra, at home;
brothers and sisters: Charles and
Joseph, Newark, N.J.; Mrs. Ann
