East Dallas Upsets Harveys Lake
3 - 33 In Top Church League Game
After the fourth week of the
Church League season only East
Dallas, last season’s cellar-dwellers,
could boast a perfect 4-0 record as
they surprised a lot of skeptical
fans by beating previously unde-
feated Harveys Lake 55-53 in a
thriller. In the second game, Hunts-
ville rolled over St. Therese’s 61-
41 and in the final contest Shaver-
town finally broke into the win with
a hard-earned victory over Prince
of Peace 33-31.
In the first contest East Dallas
held a slim margin throughout most
of the game, with the biggest lead
being 9-0 in the opening moments
of play. The score was tied at 24-
all at the sound of the halftime
buzzer and the fans. certainly saw
some exciting basketball for the
remainder of the contest. For East
Dallas, Wes Evans again scored his
team’s first 9 points and finished
high man of the evening as he hit
his average of 22 points. Doug Shel-
ley, who played a fine game at
guard, finished second in the scor-
ing with 13 points and manager Fred
fancy
outside shooting that hurt the Lak-
ers in vital moments and walked
away with 9 counters. For the los-
ers it was Don Hinkle with 18
points followed by Gene Brobst’s 11.
East Dallas, a very scrappy team
with a fine flair for moving the
ball, has now won more games than
they did all of last season. For the
past several seasons they have fin-
ished on or near the bottom in the
final standings and this year they
seem to want to make certain this
doesn’t happen again.
In the second game, St. Therese's
had a 2 point lead in the end of
the first quarter, but never led
again throughout lthe entire contest
as a strong Huntsville team gradu-
ally built up momentum to win go-
ing away 61-41. The Saints had
trouble with their accuracy and
didn’t score even one goal in the
entire final period. For the win-
ers Don Fossedal hit for 6 goals and
a perfect 6 for 6 at the free throw
line to compile 18 points, and Clint
Brobst, playing with an injured
knee, hit with phenomenal accur-
acy from the outside to finish sec-
ond in the scoring column with 11
tallies, Len ‘Pooch” Kozick and
Bill Strausser had 9 points each. For
the losers Pete Letts was high with
18 points, followed by Danny Rich-
ards with 10 and Bob Bolton with
8.
In one of the lowest scoring games
in quite some time, Shavertown
finally won their first game as they
Prince of Peace led .throughout
most of the contest but Shaver-
town managed to have a big third
period in which they outscored the
losers 13-6. For the winners, center
Don Rome was high scorer with
12 points followed by Bob Hontz’s
8, 6 of which he scored in their
big third period. Prince of Peace’s
scoring was led by center Jim
Thomas and his 15 counters. Bob
Coolbaugh did a fine job of rebound-
ing for the losers.
This week, December 30, the
games will be played at the Dallas
Senior High School gymnasium. The
schedule is as follows: 7:00 p.m. - St.
Therese’s vs, Prince of Peace, 8:00
p.m. - East Dallas vs. Shavertown,
9:00 p.m. - Harveys Lake vs. Hunts-
ville.
