HET It took either an over-ardent hunter or just a plain fool to ven- ture into the woods last Monday for doe—take your pick. Monday before the sun presented itself, two fellow hunters and I had made. our way over miles of almost impassable icy roads to our desolate destination. ‘ At 7 o'clock sharp we sank deep into our hunting coats and started into the woods feeling our way through the blinding rain and fog. After two hours of creeping along, I found myself separated from my buddies on top of the wettest, fog- giest mountain that I could have picked. Accepting the elements as they were, I strained my eyes for the next couple hours trying to spot a doe swimming through the thick laurel. It’s a good thing it wasn’t buck season and I had to disting- uish horns! All morning I kept telling my- self, “Just be patient and the rain will stop, the fog will lift and I'll be one of the.few dragging out a deer, passing all the fair-weather hunters as I make my way down the grade.” It might have worked if Mother Nature wasn’t so darn set on giving me a bath. After the fight was all washed out of me I decided that I had better head back before I drowned FUR & FEATHER By. The Post’s Wildlife Reporter—dJohn Kupstas Faun eS in my wet clothes. When I came to the edge of the flat top mountain I anticipated looking down into the valley below and picking out familiar landmarks so that I could descend to where the car was parked. Instead of seeing familiar landmarks, I viewed what appeared to be a white sea of milk, the fog was lying so thick in the valley that a flip of a coin was as good as my guess as to where | the car was parked. So with a deep | breath I picked my descending path and submerged into the fog. I finally came down—you guessed it—on the wrong side of the moun- tain. It couldn't have happened at a better time to make the day complete. ‘* Well, let me finish fast because I'm tired, wet and besides I have a long walk ahead of me. The win gives Dal- las a 4-1 slate, having dropped the | opener to Wyoming by three points. | Again it was the fine scoring and | playing of junior Tom Gauntlett | that sparked the Dallas aggregation as the tall, slender cager canned 35 points on 14 goals and 7 free throws. Dale Mosier also scored in double figures for the second straight game as he notched 12 points. Dallas jumped to a commanding 26-10 lead by the end of the open- ing quarter and at half maintained a 6 point bulge, 42-26 as the teams battled on even terms in the second period. With coach Clint Brobst using his reserves freely throughout the second half Hanover was able to cut the lead but not enough to over- come its half-time deficit. Leading the losers ‘was Gegaris with 30 and Guesto 17. The 35 markers chalked up by Gauntlett now gives him a total of 138 for five games for a 27.3 aver- age.
