HUNTING
Every hunter gives off human
scent. This scent is carried through
the woods by the wind, and that's
why a hunter must be downwind
from his game. But what happens
when there is no breeze, when the
day is perfectly calm. The scent is
still present, It travels out from the
hunter in a circle so that the hunt-
er is “surrounded” by the scent.
Therefore, on a calm day it's a good
idea for a deer hunter to change
stands every 20 minutes. This
breaks up the scent pattern and
confuses the deer so it doesn’t know
for sure just where the scent is
coming from.
Deer are curious critters. If you
take up a stand in a deer path, try
this method of decoy. Hang your
hat or a brightly colored piece of
cloth on a branch or twig. Upon
seeing the unusual object hanging in

his terrain, Mr. Buck may just get
nosey enough to start investigating
and momentarily drop his guard.
That's the moment you've been
waiting for!
Don’t put away your fish stringer
when the fishing season is over. It
can be put to equally good use
afield, A fish stringer makes an
excellent carrier for squirrels. Hook
the squirrel in the hind leg between |
bone and tendon and suspend the!
stringer from your belt. You'll have
an easy way to carry your downed
game afield and both hands will be
free to tend to the business of the
day.
FISHING
While you're waiting for next
spring to roll around you have the
chance to save up a few items that
will come in handy when the big
ones are biting again. Toothpaste
tubes, shaving cream tubes, and the
‘ous weights,
like, make good emergency sinkers.
You can cut them to size for vari-
No tackle box should
be without ’em.
Save these cigarette butts too.
Now don’t go raising your eyebrows
wondering if we've popped a cork.
The filter part of filtered cigarettes
can be put to good use for fishhooks.
Just slip the filter over the hook
and you are sure of not getting
stuck. Wintertime will give you a
chance to store these “corks” unless
you've switched your brand.
Speaking of cigarettes, here's one
way a lighted cigarette can help
you catch more fish. If you touch
the cigarette to the loose ends of
monofilament knots, the end will
flare and form knots that will not
slip. A knotty problem easily
solved.
CAMPING
A two bladed knife—one with a
blade at each end—makes a first-
rate candle holder in case you need
light inside a tent. Fasten the
candle on one blade (preferably the
smaller) and stick the other blade
into the tent pole. Just make sure
the candle is a safe distance from
the walls of the tent and you're all
set with an emergency light.
Everything changes. There is al-
ways a better way to do something.
The invention of spray paint has
introduced a new way to mark a
trail. Instead of marking trees
with an ax, which makes hard-to-
see signs at twi-light or dark, you
can now spray your wayalong a
trail with push-button paint. Use
a bright color and youll be sure to
find your way back to wherever
you started from.
One way of breaking in new
leather boots may sound like a des-
perate measure but it has worked
for many sportsmen. Soak the mew
boots in water for 10-15 minutes.
Then wear them until the boots
are dry. Youll find that the next
time you put them on, they'll be as
comfortable as your favorite pair
of old shoes.

DALLAS, PENNSYLVANIA
East Dallas Upsets Huntsville
Alderson Remains Undefeated
by Keith P. Yeisley
Church League action roared into
it’s second week on Saturday night
as three games were played at the
beautiful new Dallas Senior High
[School gymnasium. After the eve-
ning’s play only two teams could
boast unblemished records, as St.
Therese’s beat Shavertown, last
year’s champs, by a score of 62-50,
scrappy East Dallas chalked up their
second victory against no defeats
by dumping Huntsville 49-42, and
Harveys Lake trounced Prince of
Peace 80-38 to keep their two-game
winning streak intact.
In the first contest, Shavertown
took a two-point lead at the end of
the first quarter but never led again
throughout the contest as St. The-
rese’s, sparked by tall center Pete
Letts and his 24 points built up a
commanding lead to put the game
on ice. It was a team effort all the
way for the Saints, who also con-
trolled both boards for the re-
bounds, Guards Don Purvin and
Jack Hogan stood out with their
fine passing and moving the ball
into the big men at just the right
time for quick two-pointers. Star
forward Bob Bolton was there to hit
the mark along with Pete Letts and
his hot hand and finished the game
in the scoring column, showing 14
tallies. Guard Don Purvin was the
other [Saint in the double figure
bracket with 10 counters. For
Shavertown, Bob Hontz, who was
held to only one field goal and two
points in the first half, came
through with 13 points in the 'sec-
ond half to lead the losers with 15
points, while center Don Rome was
next with 9 points. All eight men
for Shavertown hit the scoring
column.
In the second game, East Dallas,
who had only five men show up,
proved that they came to win and
led Huntsville in every period
while building up their victory
margin, Wes Evans, easily the
outstanding Church Leaguer on the
floor for the second consecutive
week, harassed the Huntsville five
continuously with his driving in for
goals and led scorers on both teams
with his 25 points. Center Bill
Lewis again excelled in rebounding,
and while Huntsville held East
Dallas sharpshooter Frak Tencza to
only one goal and two points, guard
Doug Shelley rose to the occassion
and dumped in 11 points. Forward
Fred Lamoreaux, team manager,
was next in the scoring with 7
points. It looked ‘to onlookers as
though East Dallas might become
wornout toward the end of the con-
test due to the fact” that the five
men had to play throughout the en-
tire contest on the large floor
while Huntsville changed off with a
total of nine men, but the victors
seemed as strong at the end of the
contest as they were at the begin-
ning. Huntsville’s hopes started to
go down a drain when Clint Brobst,
one of the team’s leading scorers,
had to leave early in the game with
a painfully injured knee. Forward
Bill Strdusser also took a bad spill,
but was ‘able to re-enter the game
after a brief rest. Ace rebounder
and playmaker Len “Pooch” Ko-
zick led the losers in scoring with
13 points followed by Don Fossedal’s
7. All nine Huntsville men hit the
scoring column in the losing cause.
Powerful Harveys Lake, sparked
by Stellar forward Don “Zeek” Hin-
kle who led all the scorers for the
evening with 27 points, had little
trouble in smothering a, game
Prince of Peace team 80-38. With
all seven men registering in the
scoring column, Harveys Lake
scored a record 52 points in the
. second half alone to leave no doubt
that they are the team to beat for
the end of the season laurels.
\
Speedy guard Bob Harris lent sup-
port to Hinkle's sharpshooting and
came - in second in the scoring
column with his 15 points, followed
by forward Gene Brobst’s 10. Dick
Searfoss and Fred Price each tallied
8 counters. The Harveys Lake
quintet led by 11 points at halftime
and literally burst the game wide
open in the second half scoring al-
most at will. They effectively bot-
tled up Prince of Peace’s high-scor-
ing center Jim Thomas and there-
fore forced the guards into the key
scoring role. Guards Tom Richard-
son and Chuck Allabaugh scored 11
and 10 points respectively, and cen-
rebounding and 7 points in a losin
cause.
