Loss Of 4 Fingers Does
Not Cramp Danny's Style
There's no keeping a good man
down, Here’s Danny Moss, son of
Werner Moss, and grandson of Mr.
and Mrs. Myron Moss down below
Sweet Valley. Does getting his four
fingers shot off last year in bird
hunting season’ in Florida discour-
age him from playing baseball and
football ?
. Not much. He was in there pitch-
ing last summer, after the soreness
was pretty much gone from his
left hand, and this year, in football
at Clewiston, Florida, elementary
school, eleven year old Danny, now
in the sixth grade, got himself
picked for the All4Star Team.
Guess what Danny wanted for
Christmas last year after he had
blown off his fingers when his
gun accidently discharged ?
You guessed it. A shotgun of
his own.

To Dedicate New Chair Ski Lift
At Elk Mountain December 16th
ELK MOUNTAIN, Susequehanna
County — Pennsylvania .skiing goes
big time December 16 with the dedi-
cation of a new 3,500-foot-long
double chairlift at Elk Mountain Ski
Center.
‘The new lift will be eapable of
transporting 800 skiers an hour to
the summit of the state’s highest
“skiable” mountain. Construction of
the new lift has been hailed as one
of the most significant contributions
to the development of the Keystone
State’s wintersports industry.
Elk Mountain is located in Susque-
hanna County, seven miles east of
the Glenwood exit of the new Penn-
Can Highway (Interstate Route 81).
It is within three hours driving dis-
tance of some 25 million people.
“Up to now,” commented Martin
J. Wilburger, Elk Mountain presi-
dent, “Pennsylvania skiing has gen-
erally been regarded as something
for those in the novice class. There
wasn't much to challenge the ex-
perts.”
Completion of the Elk Mountain
chairlift changes this picture he as-
serted.
From the plateau atop the 2,693-
foot mountain, five trails branch
out in all directions. They vary in |
length from a mile and a quarter to
three-quarters of a mile. These trails
are wide — 65 to 150 feet — and
they are well groomed and seeded. |
Elk Mountain is steep enough to |
provide more “expert” class skiing |
than can be found at any other ski |
The hill has a !
vertical drop’ of 1000 feet — the |
greatest such drop listed by a Penn-
sylvania ski facility.
In "addition to the chairlift, the |
Northeastern Pennsylvania ski cen- |
ter operates a 2200-foot-long T-Bar |
lift which has been popular with
skiers for the past two seasons.
Other new facilities at the moun-
tain include a modern A-frame base
lodge near the T-Bar and Chairlift
terminals, improved access roads
and parking for 800 cars.
A snowmaking system, capable of
piling up four inches of artificial |
snow every hour, has been extended
and improved to provide insurance
against snowless days which once

plagued Pennsylvania skiing.
Asked if the snowmaking equip-
ment would be installed to the top
of the mountain, Mr. Wilburger had
a ready answer:
“Have you ever been at Elk Moun-
tain ? There’s snow on the top until
Memorial Day. ‘The .only trouble
has been that you couldn't get up
there to ski. Now — with the new
chairlift — it’s a different story.” |
