Charles Mayer Loved
All Growing Things
Charles C. Mayer. who I -d made
of gardening a' fine art for many
years, would have considered the
gentle rain on Tuesday as a bene-
diction, relieving the thirsty earth
after a season of drought. Rain fell
as services were conducted from the
Bronson Funeral Home, and rain
fell as he was being buried in Ward-
an Cemetery. ‘
Mr. Mayer , 72, died at his home
on Lake Street Saturday morning
after a long illness He had made
of his grounds a beauty spot of
living green, lavishing the same love
of growing things upon it that had
insured him an eighteen year post
as gardener for the late Judge
Andrew Hourigan. Love of the soil
was the priceless ingredient.
He was born in Lake Township,
son of the late David and Albertina
Ell Mayer. Since 1920 he had lived
at the home on Lake Street.
After leaving Judge Hourigan’s
employ when the estate at Harveys
Lake passed into other hands, Mr.
Mayer worked for nine years at
the Commonwealth Telephone Com-
pany, retiring a year ago. He be-
longed to the Junior OUAM. In his
youth he played baseball, and re-
4 mained a faithful baseball fan.
He leaves his widow, the former
Letha Adelman; a son Grayden, a
well-known artist and teacher of
painting ,specializing in water col-
or; two grandchildren, Eric and Todd
Mayer, Dallas; a brother Adolf,
Philadelphia.
Rev. Russell Lawry officiated.
Pallbearers were Benjamin Rood, |
Elmer Hoover, Thomas Traver, Ralph |
Hallock, Robert VanHorn, and John |
Dungey.
NRSGIVING
THE DALLAS POST, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 1961
SWEET PEACE
Submitted by Robert Hoover
When language and disease invade—this trembing house of clay,
Tis sweet to look beyond this cage—and long to fly away.
Sweet to look inward and attain—the whispers of His love,
Sweet to look outward to the place—where Jesus pleads above.
Sweet to look back and see my name—in life's fair book set down,
Sweet to look forward and behold—Eternal Joys my own.
Sweet to reflect how Grace Divine—my sins on Jesus lay,
Sweet fo remember that His blood—my debt of suffering paid.
Sweet on His Righteousness to stand—which saves from
Sweet on His Covenant of Grace—for all things to depend.
Sweet to lie peaceful in His hand—and know no will but His,
Sweet to rejoice in lively hope—that when my chance shall come,
Angels shall hover around my bed—and waft my spirit Home.
Then to my dis-imprisoned soul—behold Him and Adore,
Be with His likeness satisfied—and grieve in sin no more.
These eyes shall see Him in that day—the God who died for me,
And all my rising bones shall say,—lord, who is like to Thee?
If such the views that Grace unfold—weak as they are here below,
What rapture must the Church above—in Jesus presence know?
If such the sweetness of the stream—what must the fountain be,
Where Saints and Angels draw their bliss—emediate from Thee?
Oh may the unctions of these truths—forever with me stay,
Till from this sinful cage dismissed—my spirit flys away.
