Jean Emanuel, our neighbor down the road, has the right idea about this inexpressibly lovely Fall foliage; she’s been trying to re= produce something of its wonder with oil paints on canvas. There are the trees opposite her front yard, so out she goes with her brushes and palette to try to reproduce some of it. She confesses some dif~ ficulty in doing it to suit her own eye for beauty. Same here; I couldn’t touch it, But I'd like to ‘try writing a psalm after the pat- tern of the famous 8th psalm in the Bible. I'd like to pretend I'm “the psalmist travelling in northeastern Pennsylvania and seeing what he never saw in [Palestine—the miracle of coloring Fall foliage: “When I consider thy heavens . . . the maples also and the oaks in all thy glory Thou has colored them, what is man, that Thou art mindful of him? Who is an artist beside Thee, O God who without paint or brush dost create color sublime? ?” Can’t do it, but there's something in us that craves to respond to the beauty around us.
