~ N. Edwin Nelson Dies
At General Hospital
N. Edwin Nelson, Dallas, died
Friday morning at General Hos-
pital, where he had been admitted
September 24 as a medical patient.
He was buried in Evergreen Ceme-
tery Monday afternoon, following
services conducted by Rev. Russell
Lawry from the Merritt Hughes Fun-
eral Home.
Mr. Nelson, 69,, retired in July
of 1960 from the newspaper field.
He had been manager of classified
advertising for Wilkes-Barre Pub-
lishing Co. for many years. His
newspaper connections began in
1906, when he became a messenger
in the editorial room of the Wilkes-
Barre Record, advancing a year lat-
er to the position of assistant circu-
lation manager. His experience in-
cluded work in the advertising de-
- partment of New York Times, and
the Gornik, a Polish newspaper.
In 1924, he moved to Dallas.
Upon retirement, he and his wife
were tendered a dinner by his de-
partment. Mrs, Nelson died last May.
Since coming to Dallas, he at-
tended Dallas Methodist Church.

new minister, Ralph Charles Smith,
|is a native of Portuguese East
Africa, born in the mission field of
Inhambane, the first, and for many
| years the main mission station of
i the Free Methodist Church.
| Though he has not been in Africa
since he was twelve years old, he
says he would feel completely at
home, should he return to work
| with the colored people of that
(area, In fact, before he decided
| upon the ministry as a vocation, he
{had considered studying medicine,
| with the goal of returning to Portu-
| guese East Africa as a medical mis-
sionary.
| His parents, the late Rev. Car-
{roll and Rosa H. (Smith, brought
| Ralph home to this country for a
three-year furlough when he was
[two and a half years old, returning
[to Africa when he was five. A fur-|
| lough when he was less than twelve
years old, saw him in this country
| permanently.

when son Ralph was fifteen, Mrs.
Smith was stricken fatally ill,
the mission field was abandoned.

Ethel O’Hearn of Canandaigua, N.Y.
Rev. Smith attended Chesbrough
Seminary, now Roberts Wesleyan.
He has been in the ministry since
1946.
On his mother’s side, he comes of
a long line of Methodist ministers.
His sister, preparing to go as a
missionary to East Africa, died in
her sleep before her goal could be
reached.
His father, superannuated after
supplying pulpits in western Penn-
sylvania upon his return from the |
mission field, spent the last ten
years of his life in California, dying
there at 79.
The ‘Smiths enjoy living in Dal-
las, and Ruth is well adjusted at
her new school. The congregation is
pleased at once more having a min-
ister in residence at the parsonage
on Mill Street.
