The course is planned to include the revolutionary research findings of the post-war years, which have contributed to a dramatic change in the conceptual framework of con- temporary biological thought, Heavy emphasis will be placed on cellular metabolism, the integrative mecha- nisms of biological organisms, and the potential importance of bio- chemistry and biophysics to biology- An advisory committee of leading biology educators has consulted with Dr. Koppelman 'in developing the course. They have included the recommendations of professional or- ganizations interested in biology. The .two-semester college course will consist of 160 thirty-minute lecture-demonstration sessions pre- sented five days per week. During the Christmas and spring holidays, special ‘guest lectures and review sessions will be presented in place of the regular class sessions, The holiday will be scheduled so as to coincide as nearly as possible with _| those of the participating colleges. Professor Koppelman, who is thirty-eight years old, received his PhD in biochemistry from the Uni- versity of Chicago in 1952, and has been a member of the biology department staff since 1948, doing both teaching and research. In June he was awarded the Quatrell prize by the University for excellence in undergraduate teaching. Dr. Koppelman has said that the course will emphasize three impor- tant concepts: (1) the trend toward a biochemical approach to life, with emphasis on chemistry’s relationship to the science of life; (2) the need for consideration of biological prob- Jems of tomorrow; and (3) the understanding. of man’s place in the scheme of things. COOK Recapping Service Daitas-Tunkhannock Highway : (6 Miles North of Dallas) ~ NE 9-8440 4 1961 BIG WEEKEND September 28, 29, and 30 are three big days to close the first month of school. This evening the seniors at Leh- man Building are giving a free dance for the students of our area schools. Music will be provided by Rythum Aces. This dance is being given in appreciation of all the activities that all the students have attended. Through their attendance the sen- ior class has gotten enough money for the Washington trip. Each senior will be allowed to bring a guest if he so desires. It is hoped that the students enjoy themselves at the “Kick-off Hop”. The money the students save from admission will probably be spent tomorrow - at the Bloomsburg Fair. The band, along with many stu- dents from the school, will have a day of fun and relaxation as they wander around the fair grounds. Numerous other units will be marching in the parade around the | race track, along with our band. Everyone will surely be exhausted | after the day of walking, but it is | one day to which most of the stu- | dents look forward.
