Two colorful Civil War Centennial
observances are the highlights of |
Memorial Day in Pennsylvania this |
year, according to. the Pennsylvania |
Department of Commerce. |
The National Cemetery at Gettys- |
Memorial Day
burg Battlefield will hold memorial |
services in honor of 7,058 Ameri-
cans, Confederate and Union troops,
who died in the Civil War's most
furious and decisive battle, Feat- |
ure of the services will be a talk
by Governor David L. Lawrence.
School children will decorate graves
in impressive ceremonies and tri-
bute.
Far to the north of Gettysburg,
several communities in the section
of Pennsylvania once called the
Wildcat District will honor the Civil
War’s most colorful fighters, the
Bucktails, who came from this re-
gion.
The original Bucktails came from |
McKean County and were organized
in Smethport. Down from the]
mountains they came, a deer tail |
bobbing on every cap. Their famil- |
iar headgear and sharp-shooting |
ability brought them the envy of
the Union Army and the respect of
the Confederates.
McKean County towns of Smeth-
port, Bradford, Port Allegheny and
Kane will be joined by communities
of other counties, all assembling in
Emporium joining in a motorcade
south to Driftwood, a point to which
the Bucktails marched and from
which the rafted down the Sus-
quehanna to join the Union Army.
The beautiful Bucktail Trail ex-
tends 100 miles from Smethport
south to Lock Haven, almost as
heavily forested and primitive as it
was 100 years ago when the Buck-
tails marched southward in the
cause of Union Forever,
