Chase Escape of an inmate from the Cor- rectional School should serve as a warning not to leave keys in parked cars. 1 This reporter feels that the Insti- tution officials should have sounded the prison siren. By so doing they would have put our citizens on the alert and on the look-out for any strange or suspicious looking char- acters, instead of keeping it quiet and trying to cover such a large territory with a few guards and State Police. If it had not been for an alert nurse in sounding the alarm things might have turned out differently. Next time, we trust, they will sound the siren. Prisoners have a way of escaping from the best of jails. The important thing is that they be re- captured before they do any harm, and an alert citizenship will be of great help. The ‘Post’ last week listed an item in its Legal Column that should be of interest to all taxpayers of this Township, namely the resolution by School Directors of Lehman Town- ship, to impose a one-per cent (1%) tax on salaries, wages, commissions, earned income, etc,. The tax is necessitated by costs incident to the School of Nursing, she is head nurse conduct of activities and functions of the School District and in partic- ular to the financing and construct- ion of the new ‘‘Junior-Senior High School”. The tax applies to Lehman Town- ship School District only but it could be harbinger of things to come. With an increase of 15 mills in our school tax last year, we can look for another increase when construction and financing of the new high school begins. It behooves us all to see that our school directors eliminate all extra frills and unnecessary items from the plans, but ample provis- ions should be made for basic sub- jects, reading, writing and arith- metic. Let’s not go overboard trying to duplicate the feats of our neigh- bors by outbuilding them, You have probably read where graduates of New York City schools could not even read properly. I do not believe this is confined to New York only. Too much time and ef- fort are put on extra curricular ac- tivities to the detriment of the basics. I believe the State Board of Education should make up a set of plans embodying all the essentials of education and make it mandatory that all school districts use them, instead of trying to outdo each other at the expénse of the taxpayers. The State Highway Department finally patched the pot holes on the Larksville Mountain Road, but missed many. They did nothing to eliminate the “wash board effect” which nothing short of a complete coverage will do. Here's hoping some of that increased gas tax rev- enue will find its way back to this distressed and worn out highway. This would be a good highway for those car manufacturers who ad- vertise ‘‘air suspension riding” to prove their point, but I am afraid they would fail to do so.
