House in Towanda, and open from
9:30 a. m. until 5:00 p. m. most
summer days, is as fascinating ‘a
place to spend several hours as we
relics, records, and historical lore
der at the collection; have countless
questions to ask the curator.
AT FRENCH AZILUM—turn | off
Route 6 at Wysox or Rummerfield
and follow the signs.
WELLES LOG BHOUSE—turn off
| Route 6 just south of Wyalusing and
cross the river bridge. At the end
of the bridge you will make a sharp
right turn and travel a little over
two miles up the river.
HOMET MILL—while you are at
the Hagerman House, make up your
mill stone at Homets Ferry. Only
the foundation of the mill still
stands, but your children will like
to see the place where the deserter
drowned. Just follow the road from
French = Azilum down along the
river to reach the old mill.
+ FRENCH AZILUM CHURCH—stop
‘| along the road between the La-
Porte-Hagerman House and the old
Homet Mill, to see this beautiful old
church.
STANDING STONE—if you turned
from Route 6 at Rummerfield, you
should have seen the sign “Stand-
ing Stone” along the railroad
tracks. Your family will be interest-
ed in the story about how the stone
was a courting place for the young
French. On warm summer evenings
and long Sunday afternoons, it was
the custom for a young man to row
a picnic.
STANDING STONE UNIVERSAL-
IST CHURCH— just past the spot
where you stopped to see the stand-
ing stone, is the Universalist Church,
built in 1827. It is an exceptional
example of early architecture and i is
almost always unlocked.
SHESHEQUIN—on another day, you
and your family may want to head
north from Towanda. Cross the river
at Ulster, (you took Route 220 north
from Towanda) and then turn left
after you have crossed the bridge.
TIOGA POINT—a little way past
the .Sheshequin church, you will
come to a lookout, where you can
see Tioga Point, meeting place of the
| | Susquehanna and Chemung Rivers.
This was a gathering place of the
Indians many years ago and is re-
portedly an excellent fishing place
at 'the present time.
TIOGA POINT MUSEUM AND
SPAULDING MEMORIAL LIBRARY
—ig right on the main street in
exhibits concern the early days of
the area. You will want to spend
several hours at this Museum.
ATHENS ACADEMY—on the
same street with the Tioga Point
‘Museum ‘is the Athens Academy
where Stephen Collins Foster, famed
composer, once attended school.
SPANISH HILL—while you are
atthe museum, ask about Spanish
Hill. and its history as a battle
between Spanish explorers and
Indians.
WORLD'S END STATE PARK—
{about 60 miles from Tunkhannock
and 40 from Towanda using Routes
220 or 87 and then following your
map. This will take you into Sul-
livan County and makes: a grand
day trip. Beautiful scenery.
use Roufes 220 and 487 from To-
Tunkhannock. Between 50 and 60
miles from most starting places in
the VACATIONER area. The beau-
tiful glen is the attraction and it
will take you several hours to walk
a day if you really enjoy scenery.
Please drive carefully,
LAMB'S LOOKOUT STATE PARK
—near Canton, stay on Route 6
north and west of Towanda, turn
on Route 14 at Troy then look for
signs. On your return trip take
Route 414 to Monroeton and To-
wanda, it is a beautiful drive along
a beautiful little stream.
CORNING GLASS CENTER-—one
of the finest exhibits in the world,
includes both the making of glass
and the museum of glass. Take
Route 220 and 17 north from Towan-
da—about 55 miles.
GRAND CANYON OF PENNSYL-
sure to enjoy is a visit to the Grand
Canyon, near Wellsboro. Just stay
on Route 6 north and west of
Towanda, about 53 miles. Two state
parks on either side of the canyon
provide breathtaking views.
JUST FOR A NICE DRIVE—leave
Route 6 at Tunkhannock on Route
29, Meshoppen on Route 267 or
Wyalusing on Route 11 and then
follow one of the other two routes
back to Route 6.
