Instantly Killed
body knew how many people had
been killed or injured.
again.
It was a toy factory on Marian
Street, the Schuyler plant.
Daniel loaded caps for toy pistol
ammunition at the Schuyler plant.
A frantic trip to Nesbitt Hospital,
while Joyce Marie visited her grand-
mother, convinced Dorothy Daniel
was not lying among the charred
victims in the accident room.
‘The news that he was dead came
as aidevastating shock.
How many more had died, how
many were trapped, nobody knew.
It was certain that one more man
had died. Jack White, a salesman
from Fullerton, who had been tele-
phoning at the time of the blast,
was, found still clutching the tele-
phone.
State Police plead with survivors
over the radio . . “If you escaped,
let us know. We are working in the
dark.”
Dense smoke blanketed the area.
Ambulances and fire engines
screamed. Ropes held back a mill-
ing throng of thousands. A wet
snow started to fall. The murk
deepened. |
Flames burst again and again
through the pall of smoke and deep-
ening darkness.
Dallas-bound cars crawled bump-
er to bumper over side streets.
Rescue squads searched for the
missing. Priests stood by to admin-
ister the last rites.
On Wednesday, ruins of the one-
story concrete structure were still
being sifted.
Mr. Zimmerman’s 1952 Chevrolet,
parked near the plant, was found,
blown to bits.
Reconstruction indicates that Mr.
Zimmerman was standing between
two machines loading ammunition.
Access to the powder room was on
the outside, through another door,
not conneeted with the factory.
The young Zimmermans moved
last year to the home they were
buying on Overbrook Road. Daniel
