The word turnpike came from an

toll roads with pikes of poles. When
the toll fee hed been paid, the pikes
or poles were lowered.

Cavan Takes Championship
In Thrilling Overtime Contest
by KEITH YEISLEY
In Church League action Saturday
night, Shavertown emerged as
League Champions by virtue of a
thrilling overtime victory over the
defending champs, Harveys Lake,
54-50,, and St. Therese’s won its
fourth in a row to end up third in
the loop by defeating Prince of
Peace, 50-43. In an exhibition game,
East Dallas soundly trounced Hunts-
ville 61-43.
Shavertown maintained an 11-
point halftime lead only to see it
dwindle to a four-point lead at the
end of the third quarter, and a 50-50
tie at the end of regulation playing
time.
With the score tied at 48-all, Dick
Searfoss, the Lakers stellar guard,
got off a long set-shot that rippled
the cords and gave Harveys Lake a
50-48 lead with about 20 seconds
remaining,
Shavertown brought the ball
downcourt swiftly and guard Bill,
Oney, who played a beautiful game,
i Searfoss showing the way in the
found himself clear and promptly
sank a set-shot from the outside.
Before Harveys Lake could
threaten again, the buzzer sounded
and the game was sent into a three-
minute overtime.
In the overtime, it was Stan Davis

and Bill Oney again who each sank
a field goal for Shavertown, giving
them a 54-50 lead which they held
until the end of the contest! What
might be interesting to note here, is
the fact that last season Harveys
Lake defeated Shavertown the last
time they met, also in an overtime
contest, and the final score was 53-
50, a difference of only one-point
from Saturday night's game!
For Shavertown, all six players
were instrumental in the victory,
but a few were outstanding. We
could mention the rugged rebound
ing and scoring of Ernie Widmann,
who proved invaluable, even with
h® having fouled out in the final
quarter; the deadly corner shooting
of forward Bob Hontz, who finished
the game with 14 points; the cool-
headed playing of Stan Davis and
Bill Oney when the pressure seemed
insurmountable; or the rugged,
heads-up ball that forward Gene
Brobst turned in as his part of the
victory.
For Harveys Lake, it was Dick
scoring column with his 15 points,
followed by Don “Zeek” Hinkle's 14.
Guard Bob Harris and forward Larry
Crispell also lent support in the scor-
ing column, the former hitting for
8 tallies and the latter for 7. The
Lakers tall center, Dave Shales,
failed to score, but was responsible
for blocking quite a few of the op-
position’s field goal attempts.

changed hands many times.
After a quick goal by St. Therese’s
went to work and built up an 18-14
first quarter lead, and managed to
maintain a 22-20 lead at the end of
the first half.
rese’s employ an effective man-for-
| man defense, enabling them to hold
the opposition to 7 points while they
scored 17.
From that point on. it was nip-
and-tuck, but Prince of Peace was
unable to make up the points lost
during the third quarter. Pete Letts,
the Saint's fine forward, led the
offensive with four goals and four
foul shots for a total of 12 points.
Bob Bolton again had a’ perfect
three-for-three .at * the foul line,
making his record a phenomenal 23
conversions out of a possible 24 in
the last three games!
Brent Yeisley put in three much-
needed goals in the first half and
five foul shots in the second half to
end up with 11 points, and Bob
Shotwell, who played a hustling
points apiece.
Hogan, was in early foul trouble,
and, as a result, had to sit a great
deal of the game out before finally
fouling out in the final quarter.
For Prince of Peace, Don Purvin
led the scoring with his 10 points,
which included some deadly set-
shooting from just beyond the foul
line. Tom Richardson and Dave
“Bruz”’ Evans played a fine game
and each finished with 8 points.
Lee Ohlman and Bob Piznar, Prince
of Peace’s 6’4” centers featured with
their rebounding.
In the exhibition game, East
Dallas managed “to avenge two
earlier defeats at the hands of
Huntsville by defeating them 61-42.
Sharp-shooting Frank Tencza led all
scorers for the evening with his 21
points, backed up by Fred Lamor-
eaux’s 16 and Connie Higgins’ 15.
For Huntsville, Clint Brobst and
Gary Dietz each scored 9 points to
lead the way in the scoring column,
supported by ‘‘Abe” Long's 8.
Saturday night, the Church
League play-offs begin. At 7 it's
Shavertown vs. Prince of Peace, at
8 it's Harveys Lake vs. Huntsville,
and at 9 it's St. Therese’s vs. East
Dallas. Try to be on hand for these
exciting games!
