This week, we publish the picture taken to accompany the feature story, showing Cathie Lou and Bar- bara Ellen watching while Granny baked, and write regretfully that Mrs. Elizabeth Brady Engelman is dead. At 97, the oldest resident of Noxen, she passed away at the Lane Nursing Home in Tunkhannock, where she had been a patient since being transferred there from the Carpenter Home a year and a half ago. She was buried in Orcutt Ceme- tery Saturday afternoon, Rev. Wes- ley Kimm, pastor of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, officiating at ser- vices from the Engelman home. After rearing five children of her own, and caring for four grandchil- dren when their mother, Mrs. Kath- erine Engelman, ga teacher at Lake- Noxen Schools, died, Mrs. Engelman was able to cope with almost any- thing. When the hurricane of 1955 struck Noxen, mowing down trees and wrecking the porch and roof of the house where she had set up housekeeping with her husband, Edward( more generally known as E. Y. B.) sixty years earlier, she took it in her stride, comforting the { smallest of the grands, Cathie Lou, lighting candles in the dark to re- assure her. It was pretty scary, there in the house alone with the Last Rites Performed For Mrs. Southwell Mrs. Harriet Southwell, Chase Road, in ill health for a number of 1 years, succumbed to a cerebral hem- orrhage Saturday afternoon at General Hospital, where she had been admitted on Wednesday by Kingston Township Ambulance after | suffering a stroke in. her own home. She was buried Tuesday afternoon at Chapel Lawn, following services conducted by Rev. Robert E. Ger- mond from a Luzerne funeral home. She was born in Wilkes-Barre, daughter of the late Mr; and Mrs. Edward Benning, and had been a resident of Chase for the past 26 years. Mrs. 'Engelman reminisced about many things, those long past and those more recent, the way things used to be ‘in Noxen, and the changes that had come to the com- munity since the late 1800's. She posed, upon request, with her Bible and her house-plants. It was a lovely picture, but the one taken in the kitchen with her little grand- children, busily stirring up some- thing good for them to eat, was more typical of a wife and mother and grandmother who had never spared herself in service to those she loved. She was a charter member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, built just two doors down the street from the family home which she and her husband had built to accommodate their . growing family when they first moved to Noxen. : The couple lost a little boy, Nor- man, when he was five years old, and a daughter forty years ago. Mr. Engelman died sixteen years ago. Mrs. Engelman was born in Indi- ana County, daughter of the late James and Eliza Hannah Brady. She is survived by three sons: Benjamin, Howard and Edgar, all of Noxen, fourteen grandchildren, twelve greatgrandchildren, and a number of great-greatgrandchildren; two brothers: George Brady, of Van- derbilt; Jesse, Rochester. Boy Scout Troop 281 Enjoys Annual Dinner Forty Boy Scouts of Troop 281, most of their parents, and a number | of visitors, enjoyed the annual din- ner last Thursday night at Dallas Methodist Church. It was a covered dish affair, with a hearty meat loaf for the main feature, and everybody was abundantly served. Robert Bachman, toastmaster, in- troduced three patrols which pre- sented short and clever skits. Mrs. Carlton Davies introduced the members of her Auxiliary com- mittee. Ray Roushey, Boy Scout Council representative, discussed Scouting and Camp Acahela. The program concluded with a movie on “Johnnie Appleseed.” Merit awards, presented by Bruce Davies, Scoutmaster, included: swimming, Bobby VanOrden; per- sonal fitness, Billy Baker; “Toys for Tots” campaign awards, Scott Strohl, ‘Robert Wiley, Tommy Rowett, Bruce Davies, Sumner Bach- man, Calvin Tinsley, John Gager, Marshall Rumbaugh, James Yarnel, Art Miller, Richard Cross, Richard Bayliss, George Mahler, and Donald Bulford.
