BEngleworms Are Big Business
Rabbits Contribute To Culture
Making headlines with his angle-®
worms in the Buffalo Courier-Ex-
press, is a former Dallas carpenter,
who finds that a combination of
rabbitry and angle-worm breeding
pits is highly profitable.
William Clifford Price has a
system. He locates his angleworm
pits, directly beneath his rabbit
hutches. The warmth from the rab-
bits ‘helps keep the worms from
freezing in severe weather, and the
output of the rabbits is highly nour-
ishing, mixed with chopped straw as
a mulch. i
The lights which burn all night
above the angleworm pits delude
the worms into thinking it is bright
sunshine outside, and they remain
securely buried in the dirt until
spaded out. When a bucketful of
angleworm-bearing earth is spread
on a slab, in the sunshine, the
worms again make a nose-dive for
the dark. This permits Mr. Price,
or Mrs. Price, or one of the seven
lesser Prices, to brush off the dirt
and uncover the worms for counting
and packing.
This winter, Mr. Price sent one
large shipment t6 Maine for labora-
tory purposes, and they froze en
route. . . but they were insured.
He has a number of different
varieties in his concrete breeding
pits, among them a startling bluish
purple item from Africa as thick as
a finger.
Anglewormg are big business. The
Price place on Tonawanda Creek at
Indian Falls near Buffalo, is strate-/
gically located near a lake which
attracts many fishermen. On the
way in, they stop and pick up their
bait from Mr. Price.
There is a steady market for
angleworms from farmers and horti-
culturists, and for scientific research.
here is also a market for rabbits
from scientific laboratories. While
the rabbits are attaining enough
size to be sent to the biological
laboratory, they are contributing to
the angleworm culture.
Bill, now 37, lived at Demunds
when he was a boy. Later he farmed
at Pikes Creek and at Noxen.
stationed in Hawaii (he was there
when the Japanese planes struck on
December 7, 1941) his dream was
to buy a little place and raise angle-
worms. The rabbits were an after-
thought.
He is a carpenter. While in this
area he worked for a number of con-
struction firms in Greater Wyoming
Valley and in Williamsport. He left
in 1954. His present employment
is with the Chevrolet Company at
Tonawanda near Buffalo, where he
is a millwright, occupied with level-
ling large machinery.
Mrs. Price is the former Lois
Bryant of Center Moreland, who was
educated at local schools and Col-
lege Misericordia. Their seven chil-
dren range in age from three to |

Snow Budget
Harrisburg, --Winter has been
hard on the Department of High-
ways.
The road agency is running short
- of authority funds for running win-
ter traffic service-snow removal,
abrasives and rentals for equipment.
The budget for winter traffic ser-
vices for two years was set up early
in 1959. It authorized $42,988,000
for the fiscal period June 1, 1959
until May 31, 1961, spanning two
winters.
By January 19 of this year the
Department had spent or committed
$38,537,000.
That left a balance of $4,451,000—
with two of the worst months of the
current winter ahead.
When the authorization runs out,
as officials expects that it will,
money for winter traffic services
will have to be obtained from other
accounts.
Last winter, 1959-60, the Depart-
ment spent $21,718,000 for snow re-
moval, cindering and so on. This
winter, $11,641,000 had been spent
up, to January 19. Costs since that
date are not yet available, including
the cost of the major statewide
storm on February 3. Also missing
from the $11.6 million are some of
the costs of the second major storm
of the winter, which occurred on Jan-
uary 19. The first major storm oc-
curred on December 11.
In addition to actual spending on
winter traffic services the Depart-
ment has $5,178,000 committed but
