Horticulturists
Local fruit growers met with
others in the profession at Jackson
Fire Hall last Thursday to study
insect control and assay different
methods of spraying. Stanley Gesell
and Dr. E. E. Honey, Pennsylvania
State University entomoligist and
pathologist, outlined procedure for
adequate control, and distributed
spraying schedules. It was announ-
ced by E. V. Chadwick, Luzerne
County Farm Agent, that copies
could be obtained by fruit growers
not able to attend the meeting, by
application at the County Office on
Water Street, Wilkes-Barre.
Harold Brace of Centermoreland,
Walter Wolfe of Lehman, and Ben
Dagosten, Sugarloaf, served on a
panel which discussed orchard man-
agement. Carl Bittner, extension
pomologist, was moderator. Topics
touched upon included brush re-
moval, deer and rabbit control, and
chemical thinning of apples. The
panel was followed by discussion of
culture of small fruits such as
grapes and strawberries,
Reelected for another year were
association officers: Mr. Brace, Cen-
ter Moreland, president; Paul Knel-
ly, Sugarloaf, vice president; Wil-
liam Kisner, Berwick RD, secretary-
treasurer. :
Mrs. Ruth S. Darbie, extension
Home Economist, held a meeting
for women during the afternoon, in
which she talked about selection of
household linens.
The Tibus skating rink has been
flooded since last week’s thaw, and
is now smooth and glassy for good
skating this coming weekend. It pro-
vides a safe place for children to
skate without danger of falling
through the ice.

The regular monthly meeting of
the P.T.A. was held at the school
Monday at eight when the meeting
was called to order by President
Samuel Davis. Secretary Mrs. Paul
Meeker read the minutes of the
last meeting which were approved.
Due to the absence of the treasurer
there was no report. Suggestions
were made to be referred to the
Ways and Means Committee for
plans for a roller skating party and
a basketball game between the par-
ents and the junior high school
students. Mr. John Rosser, high
school principal of the Dallas-Frank-
lin-Monroe Joint Schools, gave a
well planned comprehensive report
on the school’s Guidance Program
which has as its aim the “all round
development of the child.” Mr.
Orland Sayre showed a most in-
teresting film on the Banff School
of Fine Arts entitled “Vacation plus
Schooling in Canada.” The seventh
and eighth grades home room won
the attendance banner for parents’
attendance at the meeting. Follow-
ing the adjournment of the meet-
ing, tasty refreshments were served.
Mr. and Mrs. Victor LaBruno are
spending some time here due to the
illness of Mrs. LaBruno’s father, Mr.
Charles Goodwin, who is a patient
at the Nesbitt Hospital.
Master Terry Belles, younger son
of Mr. and Mrs. Robert, Belles, is
home from the General Hospital
where he was a surgical patient
last week.
