Rheumatic Fever Clinic in Wilkes-
Barre, Dr. John F. Giering, medical
director of the clinic, has disclosed.
For the first time in its eight
years, Rheumatic Fever Clinic is’
not faced with a large backlog of
patients and can accept new patients
with assurance they will be exam-
ined almost immediately, the direc-
tor added.
If a physician is undecided about
a heart murmur a patient has, he
may refer the patient to the clinic
for evaluation. Any person 21 years
of age or under is eligible for exam-
ination at the clinic. A person does
not need to have had rheumatic
fever to be admitted to the clinic.
No one is accepted at the clinic
unless referred there by an attend-

the name of the joint district en-
compassing Dallas, Franklin, and
Monroe Townships or for a suitable
high school name, these suggestions
may be telephoned or written to
the school office.

The clinic is in Wilkes-Barre Gen-
eral Hospital. Appointments may be
made by calling the Rheumatic
Fever Clinic. at the hospital. Two
clinics are held monthly.
Since its inception in 1947 until
last May, 808 patients were exam-
ined. Many cases of congenital
heart disease have been operated
and thus far there has been no
mortality.
Pennsylvania has 17. rheumatic
fever clinics. The medical director
of each clinic is certified by the
American Board of Internal Medi-
cine or Pediatrics. Each clinic has
a. secretary and there is always a

at the Rheumatic Fever Clinic. A
complete physical examination is
performed and any laboratory
studies are done that are considered
necessary, such as urinalysis, blood
count, sedimentation rate, electro-
cardiograph, chest X-ray or fluoro-
scopy. There is no charge to. the
patient as this program is under-
written by the Rheumatic Fever Di-
vision of the State Health Depart-
ment, Dr. Giering emphasized.
A report of the examination is
sent to the referring physician with
recommendations for treatment. No
treatment is given at the Rheumatic
Fever Clinic. The patient will be ac-
cepted for re-examination only on
physician,
When the diagnosis of congenital
heart disease is made, there is pro-
vision for further study in selected
medical centers and provision for
surgery where indicated. When the
family is unable to meet this ex-
pense, the Division of Rheumatic
Heart Disease will assume the cost
of examination and hospitalization.
First, the patient must be seen
in a State Rheumatic Heart Disease
Clinic. With the approval of the
family and family physician, the
director of ‘the clinic sends a request
for further study and surgery if in-
dicated. The division of Rheumatic
Heart Disease will arrange for an
appointment in ‘either Philadelphia
or Pittsburgh. The family and family
doctor are notified of the appoint-
ment date and told that, if an
operation is indicated, the child will
be given a date for operation at the
time of examination. At the same
time, a State nurse is asked to visit
the family and evaluate the home
situation. Where payment for the
