Lawler reported that since the Com- monwealth tock over operation of 10 toll brides in 1949, tolls amount- ing to $6,411,086.44 have been col- lected. In addition the State has collected $135,626.34 interest on investments and deposits. The net cost of the brides was $7,808,413.20 with the [Common- wealth assuming outstanding bonds and miscellaneous cost of $429,- 722.26 or a total net cost of $8,- 238,135.46. The net cost in excess of tolls and interest as of August 31, 1955 was $1,691,422.68. In a forecast of the approximate date the bridges will be free, Depart- ment statisticians figure at the pres- ent rate of traffic using the bridges, it can be expected early in 1957. It is pointed out, however, that this forecast is based entirely and completely on the present trend in traffic, the condition of all of the bridges in their present form and the possible development of a sys- tem of free bridges in the immedi- ate vicinity of existing toll struc- tures, affecting toll collections. The original legislation authoriz- ing the States to take over the toll bridges specified that none of the bridges would be free until the State has collected the total cost of the structures. ; The financial statement showing net cost of bridge and net tolls col- lected for the 10 bridges (with cents omitted): Net Tolls Bridge Net Cost Clark’s Ferry ...... $ 531,685 $ 895,939 Market Street Harrisburg 3,397,264 2,259,645 ‘Walnut Street ' Harrisburg « 1,285,260 379,599 Eighth Street 453,029 151,036 Ellwood- Koppel ... 215457 251,962 Sunbury 651,181 827,806 'Charleroi- Monessen 551,108 757,490 Minsi Trail 270,562 287,487 New Street 67,085 . 234,942 Point Marion 325,778 359,176 Yard Mart Opens The Yard Mart, a shop for high class yard goods opened on Friday. In case of an emergency is the only time a car should be driven faster than the speed limit al- lows. Young and old alike seem to have the idea that an open highway means “Full Speed Ahead!” This is not only dan- gerous to yourself but to others as well, i It has been proven that an automobile traveling at sixty miles per hour has the same capacity for inflicting damage that the same automobile would have if it were driven off a ten story building, 120 feet Plan Community Night Plans were made for the Com- munity Night program at the meet- ing of Dallas Rotary held at the Country Club Thursday night.
