Car Crashes Pole
At Pikes Creek
Teen-Agers Escape
Serious Injury
Seven teen-agers, four boys and
three girls, escaped death Tuesday
night at 11 when the car in which
they were returning from Wolfe's
Grove roller skating rink struck an-
other car almost head-on at Pikes
Creek, rolled down the road, and
hit a utility pole.
The car, driven at high speed,
left the road at the curve near
Charles Updyke’s barn, swerved
back from the shoulder, crashed into
the second car with the left front,
and rolled over before coming to
rest on its side against the pole.
David Davenport, 61, Shickshinny,
driver of the second car, seeing the
car coming, out of control, pulled off
the road, pursued by the flying
car. His car is badly damaged. The
young driver did not carry insur-
ance. :
The Alfred Bronson ambulance
took five of the victims to Nesbitt
Hospital. Mr. Rittenhouse, of Hun-
locks Creek, following with two
more. The driver, Marvin Puter-
baugh, 18, Plymouth, was the most
seriously injured. Flesh was stripped
from his right hand and he bled
from scalp wounds. The remaining
six were treated for shock, brush
burns, bruises and contusions. One
girl suffered injuries to her lips
and teeth.
Mrs. Fred Updyke, hearing the
car roar down the hill, said, “He’ll
never make that turn,” and with
that there was the sound of the
crash. Other neighbors concur that
the car was speeding.
