Whether their sons and daughters are little people or big people, Mothers always help them when they fall. It is the instinct of men and women to be grateful for the blessed services of Motherhood, to honor a Mother while she lives, to pay her the heartfelt tribute of remem- brance after she is gone. . We do these things faithfully, most of us. Mother’s Day is one of the best proofs we have of the inherent goodness of men and women. The worship of Mothers by their children is one of our deepest virtues. In honoring them, we honor ourselves. Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote: “A Mother is a Mother still, The holiest thing alive.” The attributes of Holiness which Mothers possess are reflected in the lives of their children. For as Shakespeare said: “Thou art thy Mother's glass, and she in thee calls back the lovely April of her prime.” The inspiration of Motherhood accounts for so much of the good that is in the world, for so many of the good men and women, that the ability of mankind to justify the hopes and dreams of Mothers is amply attested. Mother's Day is more than an occasion for paying tribute to Motherhood. It is also a day in honor of the sons and daughters of Mothers, the children who go to the earth’s farthest places and still remember. Lucky is the man who can still return to a Mother's shrine and renew the tribute of love for the triumph of eyes that can still adore, hands that may still caress. Whether the return is that of the child who comes to bask again in a Mother's pride, or that of the prodigal to whom only the opportunity for atonement remains, the glory of the welcome is undimmed. It is not the spirit of Mother’s Day that bitterness should linger, or regrets survive. It is a day of beautiful memories, of the sweet recollections that are the heritage of days that will not dawn again. : Keep it that way, as every Mother would have it. or Rev.
