Brews Coffee in Japan ...2 Col Cut
WAC 2d Lt. Madeline E. Baur,
Shavertown, Pa., brews a pot of
coffee in Japan during a recent com-
mand post exercise held by the
Army's XVI Corps. All personnel
from the corps headquarters, in-
cluding Wacs, moved into the field
for five days of training under sim-
ulated combat conditions.
Lieutenant Baur, executive officer
of the 8017th Army Unit's WAC
Detachment, has been in the Far
East since November of last year.
Before entering the Army in August
1952, she graduated from College
Misericordia and worked for Spring
Brook Water Service Co., Wilkes-
Barre. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
John M. Baur, live at 92 Shaver
avenue.
James J. Durkin, Sr., Lake Street,
representative of Philadelphia Life
Insurance Co., has qualified for
membership in the. 1954 Million
Dollar Round Table for the fourth
successive year according to an an-
nouncement by G. Nolan Bearden,
national chairman of the organiza-
tion.
The MDRT comprises the top pro-
ducers of all life companies. To
personally have written $1,000,000
of life insurance during 1953 or
$1,000,000 for three consecutive
years to qualify as a life member.
David Parsons Ready
For Duty In Navy
David Parsons graduated from
University of Idaho last week, and
is spending a brief time with his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Par-
sons, in Kunkle, before starting on
a three-year stretch of duty in the
Navy. After three weeks at Corpus
Christi, Texas, and three at Little
Creek, Virginia, Dave will become
a full fledged ensign, assigned to
Aircraft Carrier Oriskany, based in
San Francisco.
Dave has been under Navy juris-
diction for four years, graduating
in Forestry as well as taking
officers training. Majoring in Fish-
ery Management, he expects to
pursue this profession upon com-
pletion of obligations to the Navy.
He was awarded the coveted
Blue Key for senior service. He
was president of the Ski Club;
secretary-treasurer of the Forestry
honor society; secretary of Fores-
ters Club; chairman of student
government; and vice president of
Delta Sigma Phi, as well as being
active in social and student affairs.
Dave was Salutatorian at Dallas-
Franklin Township high school
graduating exercises in June, 1949.
Bearden said that 1,492 life in-
surance men in the United States,
Canada and South America qualified
for membership in the 1954 round
table. All were eligible to attend the
organizations national conference
to be held in Coronado, California,
June 15 through 18.
Mr. Durkin attended some of the
previous conferences in California
and planned to attend again this
year until he was injured recently
in an automobile accident. He is
now home and able to be about but
still rather shaky.
Ralph Sands Attends
Holstein Convention
Ralph Sands of Sandsdale Dairy
Farm, Carverton, was one of 17
delegates elected by Pennsylvania
Holstein Breeders to attend the
national convention of the Holstein
Breeders Association in Grand
Rapids, Mich., from May 31 to June
3. There are more than 45,000
members of the Association.
Mr. Sands flew out by American
Air Lines and was accompanied by
four Bradford County delegates who
boarded the flight at Elmira.
They were among 1186 delegates
and friends who attended the
annual association dinner in the
Civic Auditorium on Wednesday
night.
At the National Holstein Sale on
Thursday, 101 animals, including
calves, were sold at an average of
$875. The top animal went for
$3,000.
Mr. Sands was the only delegate
from Luzerne County. W. D. Fair-
child represented Columbia County.
Last ‘week Mr. [Sands attended
the New York State 300th anniver-
sary sale of Austin Backus at Earls-
ville. There 52 head averaged
$1,000. Among them was a heifer
assigned by Mr. Sands.
Chase Bag Firm
Odus L. Moore, former produc-
tion superintendent of Fernbrook
Plant of Bloomsburg Mills, will
leave shortly to assume a similar
position with Chase Bag Company
of Goshen, Indiana.
The 107-year-old firm is a leader
in its field manufacturing all kinds
of plastic, jute and cotton bags,
and has plants from coast to coast.
Mr. Moore will report on July 12
to Philadelphia and will be assigned
for a period of time at plants in
New Orleans and Kansas City, Mo.,
before taking up his duties at
Goshen, a town of 13,000 near
Elkhart.
Mrs. Moore and the children,
John and Kathleen, will spend the
summer at Lake Chautauqua with
her family, later going on to
Goshen.
Mr. and Mrs. Moore came to
Shavertown in 1951 and since that
time have taken an active interest
in community life. Mrs. Moore
taught a Sunday School class at
Shayertown Church while Mr.
Moore was a member of the Metho-
dist Men’s Club, taught Sunday
School and was chairman of the
Boy Scout Committee. Mrs. Moore
was a Girl Scout leader and took
advanced work at Camp Edith
Macy. Both were vitally interested
in the schools and Mr. Moore was
one of the founders of Back Moun-
tain Memorial Library Town Meset-
ing Committee.
