Howard, after two years of high school at Harveys Lake, decided that school was not for him, and signed himself up as an apprentice carpenter with his uncle, William Whitesell, a Kingston contractor. This move laid the foundation for the present construction program, which has seen Whitesell Brothers building upwards of 150 houses in an area embracing Bear Creek, Mountain Top, North Lake, Nanti- coke, Harveys Lake, Dallas, Shav- ertown, and Lehman. The present project at Oak Hill, a ninety-acre development near Idetown, already has thirty-two completed houses, with a dozen more in the building. The goal is the best house that .can be built with a moderate investment, qual- ity not sacrificed to quantity pro- duetion. The farm that he had bought at Pikes Creek after his return from the South Pacific, found a ready sale to his father, George Whitesell. A barn on the property lent itself to remodelling for a wood-working shop, and Howard, Elwood, and George started to turn out mold- ‘ings and other interior strip and general millwork. One thing lead- ing to another, and carpentering being in the family blood, the next step to actual building and even- tually to contracting was com- pletely logical. Howard was already a carpenter, a member of the AF of L after serving his four years apprentice- ship with his uncle. Howard rose from private to staff "sergeant and developed an abiding hate for tropical islands. Before his discharge, he married the former Dorothy Harmond of Dallas. The couple has two boys, Gary, 8, and Ronald, 5. After sell- ing the farm, he built his present home on Fernbrook Road. There isn’t too much time for recreation in a schedule as tight as that maintained by the White- sell brothers, but Howard gets up to Canada in the spring for a ten day trek into the lake region above Quebec during trout season, and Elwood breaks away later in the summer for bass. The first day of rabbit hunting finds Howard afield for small game. Vital statistics show him born June 8, 1924, at General Hospital, his parents George and Bessie Whitesell, then living in Forty Fort. When he was four years old the family moved to Oklahoma City, moved back to Pennsylvania and settled at Pikes Creek when he was six, just in time to launch him in the first grade in a one-room school house after kindergarten ex- perience in Oklahoma. Until he was twelve years old he attended this school, going to Laketon school for the two years mentioned. Not many young men of twenty- nine have accomplished as much in this area. His success reflects credit upon his forebears, upon his own initiative, and doubtless upon the down to earth education re- ceived in the one-room school. Parents will be asked as in years past to hard-boil and dye as many eggs as possible for the event. And again, baskets will be prepared for crippled children and shut-ins. On the committee are Arthur F. Smith, Chief Jesse Coslett, Patrol- man Herbert Updyke. Supplemen- tary police will assist in keeping order at the egg hunt and distribut- ing prizes. Pre-school children will have a section of their own, smaller grade school children another sec- tion. Eggs for older children will be hidden in more inaccessible spots, and no infringing upon small children’s territory will be per- mitted. Last year 1500 children were ac- commodated. The Susquehanna County Club is an up and coming Association doing an excellent job of breeding and promoting top quality cattle. It is with a great deal of pleasure that Sandsdale and Hillside Farms welcome and show the Susque- hanna breeders their Holsteins. We are justly proud of our Holsteins. Hillside Farms is one of the oldest breeders of Holsteins in the state and Ralph Sands is one of the younger progressive breeders. When money talks these days, it’s probably asking what happened. I have not heard of any visiting Dallas, but more than likely they are here. The Mourning Doves have been in Dal- las for several weeks as well as the Purple Finches. It is interesting to note that the Mourning Dove is one of the few birds that is known to nest in every state in the Union. In the open fields the newcomers include the Killdeer, the Horned Lark and the Woodcock. It is a wonderful time to go afield. The winter birds have not yet departed, and some of the ear- lier migrants are already here, add- ing spice to one’s field trip.
