EASTER—1953
A soul-weary humanity, burdened by sorrow and
thrilled by heroism, rejoices at the coming of Easter. This
enriching event of the Christian year is the climax of
Lent. It signifies both Christ's mastery of life and life
eternal. During Holy Week, Christ proclaimed His
spiritual authority, forgave His persecutors, triumphed
over the Cross.
Easter says to those of us who are perplexed, “That
which happened long ago in a garden-tomb in Jerusalem
can happen now in the citadel of one’s soul.” As we walk
through the valley of the shadow of disaster and death
and fear and anxiety, we are comforted by, “Lo, I am
with you always.” We are strengthened with “Come unto
me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give
you rest.” We are challeriged, “Thou shalt love the Lord
thy God . . . and thy neighbor as thyself.”
It is a profound paradox of Christianity that victory
begins with surrender to the highest. Commitment to the
holiest aspirations of man assures justice and brother-
hood, harmony and peace. Knowing that consecration to
the Christian heritage guarantees the salvation of men
and mations, a chastened humanity is penitent before the
tragedy of our day. It turns in hope to the Christ.
Christ, once seemingly defeated on a cross, is our
guarantee of victory. So Easter, seen against the somber
hues of a fear-haunted civilization, heralds a new day of
victory. It says to all people, “The glory of Easter will
dawn. Its spirit is eternal.”

Toll-Gate Lions
Start Campaign
Distribute Boxes
For Sight-Saving
01d Toll4Galte Lions are distribut-
in 10C counter boxes locally and
in Luzerne and Wilkes-Barre, main-
ly to business places, for collection
of small change to aid the Lions’
sight-saving program. Boxes will be
in place for two months. Lear Wag-
ner is chairman for the Old Toll-
‘Gate Club, and Calvin MicHose for
District 14-H.
Lions are assisted in their loca-
treatments for fautly vision by
school nurses. Hearing defedts are
also taken into consideration, with
audiometers used in testing reac-
tions. Doctors cooperating with the
project make reduced charges for
such work, enabling funds to be
stretched and more children treated.
The program covers Dallas, King-
ston, Lehman, Jackson, and Lake
Townships. :
