THANKSGIVING DAY
By Lydia Maria Child
Over the river and through the wood,
To grandfather’s house we go;
The horse knows the way
To carry the sleigh
Through the white and drifted snow.
Oh how the wind does blow!
It stings the toes
And bites the nose,
As over the ground we go.
Over the river and through the wood,
To have a first-rate play.
‘Hear the bells ring,
“Ting-a-ling-ding!
Hurrah for Thanksgiving Day!
Over the river and through the wood,
And straight through the barnyard
‘We seem to go
Extremely slow,
It is so hard to wait!
Now grandmother’s cap I spy!
Is the pudding done?
Hurrah for pumpkin pie!
Over the river and through the wood,
Trot fast, my dapple-gray!
Spring over the ground,
Like a hunting-hound!
For this is Thanksgiving Day.

AND thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in Egypt;
and thou shalt observe and do these statutes. ;
THQU shalt observe the feast of tabernacles seven days, after that
thou hast gathered in thy corn and thy wine;
AND thou shalt rejoice in thy feast, thou, and thy son, and thy
daughter, and thy manservant, and thy maidservant, and the Le-
vite, the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, that are
within thy gate.
SEVEN days shalt thou keep a solemn feast unto the Lord thy
God, in the place which the Lord shall choose; because the Lord
thy God shall bless thee in all thy increase, and in all the works
of thine hands, therefore thou shalt surely rejoice.
