THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Christ teaches His disciples
to say, ‘Our Father.”
Elmer Ellsworth Helms
(California)
Our Father who art in heaven.
(Matthew 6:9. A.S.V.) Read John
14:1-6.
Horace Bushnell says, “If Christ
had never taught the world any-
thing but to say “Our Father,” He
would be the world’s greatest bene-
factor.”
In the Old Testament God is
spoken of as Father about a half-
dozen times. In the four Gospels
Christ speaks of God as Father
some one hundred and sixty times.
And in the Acts of the Apostles and
the Epistles He is thus referred to
very often.
Christ is ever comparing and con-
trasting our earthly father with our
heavenly Father. ‘Love your en-
emies, and pray for them that per-
secute you; that ye may be sons of
your Father who is in heaven.” If
a son ask bread of his father, will
he given him a stone? The evident
answer is “No.” Christ then asks,
“How much more will your Father
who is in heaven give good things
to those who ask him?”
To His disciples He gives thle as-
surance: “In my Father's house are
many mansions . . . I go to prepare
a place for you.” It is the Son of
God who so loves us that by faith
in Him and by doing His will we
can. come . unto ‘the Father in
heaven.
