WHUM-TV Tower
Is Higher Than
Famous Eiffel
Located On Route
85 Tower Will
Rise 1,000 Feet
Erection of the WHUM-TV (pri-
mary affiliate of ICBS-TV) tower
which will be higher than the fam-
ous Eiffel Tower in Paris, is well
under way at Summit Station which
is at the Berks Schuylkill line ox
Route 83. The Eiffel Tower is one
of the Seven Wonders of the World.
WHUM-TV’s tower will be even
higher. Arrangements have been
made by the management of
WHUM-TV and the State Police to
hdndle large crowds who will be
looking at the tower over the week-
end. The tower is now 150 feet
high.
The $250,000. 1036 foot tower is
being erected by the same crew of
riggers who last February erected
an equally tall tower in Greenland.
They are familiar with the difficul-
ties encountered in extreme weather
conditions, Fortunately, the weather
conditions at Summit [Station in
Pennsylvania are not nearly so
severe as in Greenland. The
tower will be completed by Novem-
ber 15.
The WHUM-TV transmitter build-
ing will be a regular bomb shelter.
6” of reinforced concrete will be
poured this next week for a roof.
Big icicles falling from a thousand
feet swirl in, such a way to become
as dangerous as an explosive artil-
lery shell. The men and the $350,000
of transmitting equipment must be
protected from falling ice. The ice
can. be blown a considerable distance
and a fantastic amount of damage
done unless the transmitter house
is protected by a heavy steel re-
inforced concrete roof.
The WHUM-TV mobile unit will
be in Hazleton at the Hotel Alta-
mont for three days, October 27, 28
and 29. Then, on October 30 the
$100,000 mobile unit will be at the
Hotel Sterling in Wilkes-Barre.
Over one million, two hundred fifty
thousand people in Eastern Penn-
syivania have already seen the
WHUM-TV mobile unit,
Televisions biggest shows will be
on WHUM-TV. The Ed Sullivan
Show—Toast of the Town, Arthur
Godfrey, and other top ‘CBS-TV
