To be sure, Jill will go through the rest of her life with one eye, but’ so far the other eye has not shown signs. of infection, and Jill is’ wearing booties to prevent scratching. Children playing on the Kings- ton Township High School grounds Thursday night noticed a very small dog with one very large eye, a hungry little dog with her ribs beginning to show. On Friday, Jill appeared at the Russell Par- sons home for a handout. There was a difference of opin- ion about Jill. A neighbor thought the kindest thing to do would be to put a swift bullet through the little head, she was so obviously in misery. Francis McCarty, Township ~ Chief of Police, when called, recognized the fox terrier as the Drake pet, and from then on it was a matter of: moments until the little dog was in the hands of a ‘Wilkes-Barre veterin; arian in the absence of Dr. George Flack. The veterinarian surmises that Jill got a sideswipe from a car soon after she disappeared in Sun- day night's storm, was tossed vio- lently, and landed on ‘the side of her head with sufficient force to pop her eye; that she then drag- ged herself into the bushes to sleep off the shock, and on awakening had lost her sense of direction and perhaps her identity. She had been seen time and again during the week, a poor little dog with a deformed eye, but until the Dallas Post published an ad- vertisement and a story, nobody connected her with the Drake pet, ads in town papers having proved futile. Jill's name is really Gill, mean- ing half-pint. She is, seven years old, with a remarkable constitu- tion to come through her recent experience. Mrs. Drake was bom- barded with telephone inquiries about her after the story came out in the Post. Eighty-Five Ribbons Awarded At Festival Eighty-five ribbons were awarded at the Alderson Methodist Church Flower Festival on Wednesday, June 27¢ Of these, Mrs. Frank Jackson won 14; Mrs. Loren Keller 7; Mrs. Walter Boehme 7; and Mrs. C. F. Goeringer 6. In the Suit-Yourself class there were two blue ribbons, won by Mrs. John Cowan and Mrs. Alan Kistler. Mrs. Howard Higgins took second. In the arrangements for a teach- er’s desk, open to children up to twelve, Beth Ann Carpenter took first prize with an arrangement of wild flowers and daisies in a por- celain log. Janet Gibbler was sec- ond, Danny Avery and Bradley tied for third. Mrs. Allen Swanson and Mrs. John Cowan won first and second respectively in matched vases. A committee headed by Mrs. Harvey Kitchen and Mrs. Otis Al- len served strawberries and ice- cream, x Lunch for the judges, Mrs. Neil Chrisman, Miss Alma Cotton, Miss Helen Crane, and Mrs. C. F. Goer- inger, served in the parsonage by |. Rev. Ruth Underwood, Mrs, May Underwood, Mrs. Raymond Gar- inger and Mrs, George Taylor. Mrs. Gilbert Carpenter and Mrs. William Deater were co-chairmen of the festival, the first of its kind at this season of the year. Mrs. Carpenter says the roses and del- phinimums were lovely. She says Frank Jackson would like a flower festival every month. It was Frank who sparked this W. S. C. S. show. Official Board .
