Drakes Froationce Flash Floods In South, Blizzard In North Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon Drake and their daughter Ruth of Lehman avenue, Dallas, experienced every- thing from flash floods in Okla- homa to a heavy snow storm in Yellowstone Park on their recent trip to the Pacific Coast and points north and south. Going by the southern route early in May, they took in the Painted Desert and Oak Creek Can- yon in Arizona, visited the Grand Canyon and Boulder Dam, and spent five days in Reno, Nevada, with Mr, Drake’s brother and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Drake. At Boulder Dam they descended five hundred feet under ground to see the colossal machinery. They stopped briefly in Virginia City. Arrived in California, they fol- lowed the coastline drive, visiting friends along the way; spent a night at Grant’s Pass; drove through the Giant Redwood Forest; and started east again via Yellow- stone Park. ; Neither the Inn nor the cabins in the park were open during the first week in June. Plows had cleared the roads, but more snow fell during the night, and travel- lers were advised not to remain for fear of a real blizzard. Snow was piled higher than the cars. The three bears, Papa, Mamma, and Baby Bear, reared up on their hind legs and attempted to claw open the car door for a handout, but the snapshots taken from close quarters inside the car will prob- ably not be good, Mrs. Drake thinks. Other transparencies taken in color are not yet back from being developed. In lodking back over the vaca- tion, Mrs. Drake speaks especially of the desert flowers, white with a yellow center, which filled the air with the perfume of gardenias but wilted immediately upon being plucked and brought into the car. She thinks the cactus flowers are marvelous, artificial in their perfection. She likes to remember Scotty's Castle, the subject of a recent Sat- urday Evening Post article, and Death Valley. And she says the AAA motels are wonderful as soon as you get west of the Mississippi. Hotels out west are now advertising them- selves to the travelling public as an economy measure, contrasted with the deluxe tourist cabins which charge more for accommo- dations but also offer more in the way of privacy and comfort, and are far cooler in hot climates. First Quarterly Conference of the Alderson-Noxen Charge will be held tonight in the Firemen’s Hall, Nox- en. A ham supper will be served at 6:30. The meeting, under the direction of the Rev. Roswell Lyon, District Superintendent will be held immediately following the supper. Official Board of the Noxen Meth- odist Church will meet at the home of Mrs. A. J. Davis on Thursday evening, at 8. June Flower Festival will be held at Alderson Church on Wednesday. MAPLE GROVE CHURCH The first social family night for the entire charge will be held this evening, June 22 in the Church | Hall. This is for Loyalville, Meeker, Mooretown and Maple Grove Meth- odist Churches. All families in these charges are urged to be pre- sent. .
