YOU KNOW ME

Here it is five weeks after the
start of spring according to the
calendar and we haven't had en-
ough warm weather to melt all the
snow off the mountains back: of
the Lake. We are not one to talk
or think much about the weather,
in fact we've been called the crown
prince of philosophers on that sub-
ject. - Often when nature gave us
-a badly needed gentle summer rain
and persons would complain about
it we'd always take the weather
man’s part, but this cold spell is
getting us down.
The ice broke up on the lake
early enough, the tenth of April,
but a heavy slush stuck around for
a week or more, and then when it
~ all melted, we had cold nights that
formed a film of the ice on four
different occasions.
The daffodils, tulips and jon-
~quils stuck their heads up through
the ground, probably because they
© go by calendar time, but have since
curled their leaves downward and
~ like us, have given up. Even the
forsythia is discouraged.
The robins chirped for a day or
two and now look as forlorn as
~if it were late September. . The
sun comes out at 10 o'clock about
once a week, but in an hour is
looking for a nice dark cloud to
~ hide in, soon finds it, and stays
there for the rest of the day.
There were times, in other years,
when a storm rose over the entire
east, that persons in the office
- would kid us about how terrible
it must be at the lake, and we
could always say, ‘it's just the
same in the valley”, but we must
confess that this year the weather
~at the lake has been more than
terrible.
When we planted our sweet peas
we had to work through a foot
crust of frozen ground, and prior
to this we never burned a leaf,
always turning them under into
the soil of our garden, but this
so-called spring, nature’s best fert-
ilizer is heaped up and a match
is set to the pile.
We dislike writing this column,
as we know our relatives in the
south will gloat. Every time they
write us a letter, or we get them
on the telephone they tell us how
cold it is up north and what beau-
tiful warm, sun shining days they
are enjoying down there. Previous
to this we have always shrugged
those remarks off with a laugh as
the days up here were very en-
joyable to us, but this year they
are right. It’s c-o-1-d outside. Right
now as we are writing this on
April 24, it is snowing. We will
kiss the winter good-by this year
with glee. Right now, we are mad,
for you see our coal is running out.
