Lake Township school kids are
working on their 1950 yearbook.
Professor George E. Taylor in-
forms us it is almost completed and
will go to press this week, or,
we should say, it will go to the
lithographers this week.
It just cccurred to us, we should
not be writing this column, as we
are a printer by trade, and we've
always claimed that printing a
yearbook with movable type is
much better and cheaper than the
lithographed process, but probably
Professor Taylor would say we are
prejudiced.” Besides, the kids get
such a kick out of the way they
are doing it, and the professor gets
just as big a kick out of it when
he tells the kids: “Now listen, this
is the twelfth time I have sent
you back to type this over. It has
to be perfect.”
“You'd be surprised, Al” the
professor says, ‘how much better
it teachs our pupils to type than
if they just took the regular typing
course.” A
We are not a bit surprised. In
fact, we are for it. We are for any-
thing that kids are interested in.
~ We are for the professor and his
faculty when we see how enthusias-
tic they are to get the yearbook to
the lithographers early in Febru-
ary when the book will not be dis-
tributed until late May. We have
five kids of our own. We think
they are good kids, but we have
never yet tried to have them ac-
complish what we desired, four
months in advance. If we thought
of something one day and they
beat the ‘‘dead line” by one min-
ute that satisfied us, so our hat is
off to the professor and his fac-
ulty.
If you could see the pupils and
teachers feverishly working after
hours and enjoying the work you
would worry less about the ‘‘com-
ing” generation and wonder why
we didn't accomplish more in ours.
“The Laketonite”, sponsored by
the senior class, when distributed
in May, will be the fourth volume.
The kids themselves do all the
work. This year’s editor is Richard
Searfoss, ably assisted by Audrey
Harris and Margaret Pruska. Bus-
iness Managers are Lyle King and
George Malta. Art editors: Delmar
Fisk, James Lerch, LaVerne Mur-
pry, and Rose Marie Yatsko. The
school has purchased a camera, and
under the direction of Miss Baer,
pupils Carol Scouten and John
Boone have taken a group of pic-
tures that would rival those seen in
any of the professional magazines.
Athletics is well displayed by
Wayne Hoover and Eleanor Newell.
History and the senior section is
edited by Ada Gordon, and alumni
happenings are supplied by Erma
Crispell.
Reporters who bring in special
news items are Treva Traver, Ar-
nold Garinger and Richard Cornell.
They turn their news items over
to Rebecca Hummel, George Malta
and Richard Searfoss to be typed.
The faculty, directing the stu-
dents through the intricate process
of lithography are: sponsor, G. E.
Taylor; photography, Miss Baer;
senior section and literature, Miss
Dunn; alumni, Mrs. Rood; typing,
Miss Sullivan and Miss Humphrey.
The book will have 72 pages, with
3000 square inches of pictures. 450
copies will be distributed.
The book is planned, pages laid
out, captions written entirely by
the kids with as little supervision
from the teachers as possible. They
do a marvelous job. We know, be-
cause we. are a printer.
