Mrs. Sharpe’s Hobby Provides
Employment For Elderly Women
the Golden Stork Gift Shop, di-
vulged the interesting fact that she
acts as agent for a-group of elderly
women in distributing their home-
manufactured - articles.
The ladies, whose ages are from
65 to 83 years, do their knitting,
crocheting and smocking in their
individual homes, scattered through
out Wyoming Valley. Orders from
department stores and baby spec-
ialty shops are received by Mrs.
Sharpe who forwards them to the
makers. They design the clothing
to specifications, The Golden Stork
also retails many of the items.
Mrs. Sharpe has always enjoyed
elderly women. Among the group
is a retired school teacher, a retired
concert pianist, A third once owned
her own millinery shop and made
frequent buying trips to Europe.
While many requesting such work
are talented, Mrs. Sharpe is careful
to choose only those who are in
good health and who live under the
most sanitary conditions,
Circumstances permitting, Mrs.
Sharpe plans to enlarge her shop
in the spring by extending the
front part of the building eighteen
feet and bringing it to street level.
Display windows will be added.
