Jap Beetles
Infest Area
Widespread Spraying
Only Real Control
Hordes of Japanese beetles have
invaded the Back Mountain region
descending on garden flowers and
vegetables as well as farm crops.
Roses, elms, cherry trees, grape-
vines, weeds and farm crops have
been attacked, forcing those who
last year said, “It looks as though
the Japanese beetle is licked” to
reconsider.
According to the New York
Times, the beetle first made its
appearance in the United States
in 1916 at a nursery in Roverton,
N. J. A small oval-shaped insect
with reddish bronze wing covers
was observed on iris plants
brought in from Japan. The fol-
lowing year this alien pest had
entrenched itself in a surround-
ing area of three square miles: the
flight of the Japanese beetle (Pop-
illia japonica) had begun.
Winging its way as far north as
Maine, south to North Carolina
and west to Ohio, the Japanese
beetle has now invaded 142,343
square miles. This does not cover
spot infestations west of the Miss-
issippi where beetles have turned
up in freight yards, and airports
as stowaways on. planes, trains and
trucks.
Although no region in. Pennsyl-
vania is free of beetles, infestation
is light in areas around Philadel-
phia, Pittsburgh and in the north-
ern part of the state. Beetles are
a serious menace, however, in
southern Pennsylvania, / particular-
ly around ‘ Lancaster and Adams
counties. Corn, clover and un-
sprayed home orchards will suffer
worst this year.
So far DDT is considered the
most effective control for adult
beetles. It is applied at the rate
of two pounds of 50 per cent wet-
table powder to 100 gallons of
water.
Its
twelve hours
action is slow, requiring
or more before it
actually kills the beetles. While
it is effective for several days in
preventing a return infestation, it
does not prevent beetles from do-
ing damage, to newly opened buds,
and leaves, and within a few days
further hordes from unsprayed
areas invade areas already
sprayed.
A complete DDT spraying pro-
gram covering a large area and
in which all citizens cooperate ap-
pears to be the only method by
which damage can be controlled.
Applications of DDT also give
good control of grubs and are
faster acting. It is applied 25
pounds to the acre or 10 ounces
per 1,000 square feet and is quick-
er than the milky disease spore
dust for treatment of grubs in
turf.

Farmers May Buy

Potatoes
d Pounds
Farmers in drought areas of
Pennsylvania can secure small size
potatoes to mix with low grade
hay or straw for filling of silos
this year according to Charles H.
Bronstein, Chief of the Price Sup-
port section of the Pennsylvania
Production and Marketing office.
The potato harvest has advanced
to the point that small sizes are
accumulating and will be made
available for livestock feeding un-
der the Price Support program.
Only small sized potatoes are
available for livestock feed, since
U. S. No. 1's are not being ac-
cepted under the Price Support
program. Due to drought condi-
tions the average of marketable
potatoes is much lower than in
previous years and the government
is accepting a larger percentage of
price support. In previous years
potato flour and potato alcohol
was a source of disposal, but these
outlets are no longer available to
the Production and Marketing Ad-
ministration. \
Farmers who are interested in
securing potatoes for livestock feed
may get them through Agricultural
Conservation Committees in all
counties of the State at 30 cents
per hundred pounds in bags, or
15 cents in bulk delivered to the
local siding. If farmers wish to
supply transportation from the
farm they may secure these pota-
toes at 15 cents per hundred
pounds in bags, or 1 cent per
hundred pounds in bulk. Instrue-
tions for making potato ensilage
may be secured from the county
agents or from the county Agri-
cultural Conservation offices in all
parts of the State.
