As the season nears its close
each succeeding week springs sur-
prises just as a magician plucks
rabbits from a hat. Harding, which
made headlines with last week's
defeat of Noxen, comes in the
spotlight again. However, this
time the tables have turned and
Jackson is the team to draw the
plaudits. In a surprising reversal
of form, the eighth place Jackson
crew humbled the second place
Harding outfit 6-4. The rejuven-
nated Dallas squad also shares the
limelight for its easy 5-1 defeat
of Beaumont. This sudden surge
after a very mediocre start has
put the Dallas team hot on the
heels of the front runners and
with Vernon and Jackson also
pushing hard the top teams might
well look to their laurels. In all
the dust and hubbub of a tight
race only Noxen, secure and serene
on the top of the heap, can remain
aloof from the commotion.
Three top games are scheduled
for Sunday, which by the way is
just the first round in eliminating
the postponed games before the
playoffs begin. Dallas and Jack-
son clash in what may be the
best game of the day. Both teams
need this game badly, but as only
one can gain the victory this looks
like a hammer-'n-tongs battle. The

THE POST, FRIDAY, AUGUST 12, 1949
same applies to the Shavertown-
Beaumont struggle. A loss by
either team might well drop it out
of the first four and possibly as
low as sixth depending on the
outcome of the other games. The
Harding-Vernon contest looms as
the dark horse. Following last
week’s loss to Jackson. Harding
isn’t as firmly entrenched in sec-
ond place as it would like to be
and would appreciate Vernon's
scalp. But then; of course, Ver- |
non might have something to say
on that. In the remaining games
it looks like Noxen over Falls,
East Dallas over Osterhout and
Orange over Carverton.
Jackson Astounds Harding
With Joe Levi showing the way
with a neat six-hit pitching chore,
Jackson broke a 4-4 tie with one
run in the seventh and another for
insurance in the eighth to down
Harding 6-4. A. Levi connected
for the game's only extra-base hit, |
a double, however Chet Rusiloski |
led Jackson's eight-hit attack on!
the two Harding pitchers with a)
pair of singles. Catcher J. Laur-
nitis was the only Harding batter
consistently to solve Levi's slants
as he also got a brace of singles.
Rosencrantz, who relieved Bpye-
hola in the seventh, was the los-
ing pitcher.
Dallas Wins Fourth
Beaumont fell victim to Dallas’
surge towards the top. Dallas
registered its fourth straight tri-
umph with an easy 5-1 victory.
The score was 1-1 in the sixth,
when Dallas let loose for three
runs and added another in the
seventh for good measure. H.
Grose, Dallas pitcher, then retired
12 straight batters with only one
break, Kennedy's single. Dallas
scored first on H. Grose’s single
and “Old Man” Lefty Danko’s
triple. Wetzel scored Beaumont's
lone tally after he singled in the
fifth, Dallas’ margin of victory
came with a single by H. Grose
and a trio of doubles by H. Brobst,
C. Brobst and Vanderbrouch.
Jimmy Knecht slammed out a
double to score G. Roberts who
had previously walked. H. Grose
had four strikeouts and gave up
two walks and six hits. Lefty
Lou Wetzel fell victim to Dallas’
ten-hit attack while giving up four
walks and collecting six strike-
outs.
