* FARM TOPICS
a
clover seed is scarce, J. B. R.
Dickey, extension agronomist of the
Pennsylvania State College, asks
that all possible crops of such seed
in Pennsylvania be harvested. These
may include late-cut clover hay,
either first or second cutting, con-
taining enough seed to pay for
threshing it.
Store Machinery— Proper care
and good storage of farm machinery
during the winter will prolong the
life and insure better service of such
equipment. Drain all parts that
contain water to prevent damage
from freezing.
Order Ornamentals—Early order-
~ Control Grain Pests— Much of
the grain needed for shipment
abroad could be provided from sav-
ings made in the control of rats,
grain weevils, and other insect
pests. J. O. Pepper, extension ento-
mologist of the Pennsylvania State
College, urges fumigation of grain
storages and poisoning of rats.

ing of desired shrubs and other
plants for Spring planting is recom-
mended. Many heavily demanded
kinds already are in short supply.
Provide Comfort— Best use of
scarce feed can be made on the
poultry farm if the layers are kept
as confortable as possible, 3% to 4
square feet of floor space per layer.
Contest Planned—A log sawing
contest will be staged Thursday
night, January 15, at the 1948
Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harris-
burg. Each county can send two
teams of two men each. Entry
must be filed with the Farm Show
Director by December 20, accom-
panied by a $2 fee for each team
entered.
Control Sheep Ticks—Sheep can
go through the winter without ticks
if they are treated with DDT before
cold weather comes. Get detailed
information from the county agri-
cultural office.
Apply Mulches— Newly planted
ornamentals can be mulched after
the ground is thoroughly frozen.
Fall Milk Needed—Level off milk
production by breeding more cows
and heifers to freshen in the Fall.
