Ar- my Air Corps, the Wilkening Manu- facturing Co., of Philadelphia, maker of Pedrick piston rings, is construct- ing in Scranton, Pa., a new war yplant for the production of piston rings for Army aircraft. The ‘Scranton location has the ad- vantage of being located in the mountains away from the exposed Eastern Coast. Also, the available supply of workers is considered more favorable than in many other production centers. In its operation of the new plant, the Wilkening Manufacturing Co. will employ upwards of 1200 work- ers. Raid Warning System Faulty Few People Heed Daylight Alert With a regularity that has become commonplace, the surprise air raid elert on Monday morning caught the Back Mountain Region unprepared. Once again air raid wardens were out-of-town or away from their sta- tions and there was no secondary system to take care of such emer- gencies. Long blasts from fire sirens gave the warning, but most people didn’t know whether they heralded a con- flagration, an air raid or the second coming. Most people went about their business as usual except along the main streets or on State high- ways where all traffic was stopped. In Dallas it was not until Mrs. Paul Shaver sent word to the schools—long after the sirens had ed in from recess play to take part in an air raid drill. Students play- ing football on Pinecrest avenue were unaware of the alarm. Other schools received the warn- ing earlier and there was little de- lay in putting drills into effect. In the rural sections and at Idetown citizens were oblivious to the alert. VV VV VV VY VV VV VV VY VY YY VY YY YOUNG WOMEN 18 to 25, High School graduates, for training in our while learning.
